From Buckingham Palace to the People's Palace. Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh visited Alexandra Palace for lunch as part of the second leg of the Golden Jubilee tour of London
Alexandra Palace’s Catering Manager, Jeremy Hopkins, joined from the Grosvenor House Hotel only two months ago. He was told on his first day that the Queen and the Duke would be visiting. “What a fantastic start to a job” said Jeremy. This was the first time a reigning monarch has visited Alexandra Palace and a truly historic visit. Jeremy is no stranger to royalty and has served Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Princess Anne as well as the Queen 15 years ago when he set out on his catering career. The menu had a distinctly UK flavour and included Scottish smoked salmon, fillet of Welsh lamb and burnt Devon cream (see full menu below). On the day there were four chefs overseen by Alexandra Palace’s own Executive Chef Jerry OSullivan and sous chef Bernard Campbell together with 19 staff to serve 110 guests. I felt exhilarated and totally satisfied because it went with out a hitch and I am incredibly proud of my whole team. When you serve the Queen and Prince Philip and it goes seamlessly there is a real sense of professional satisfaction, said Jeremy. Alexandra Palaces catering department has a proven track record and can cater for elaborate banquets of more than 5,000. Other international figures to have visited recently include President Bill Clinton, Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Dalai Lama and Princess Anne.

THE EUROPEAN OPEN
Experience the excitement of Raw Horse Power…
6-11 August 2002
Guards Polo Club, Windsor Great Park
The Fast Action Spectator Event
Experience the excitement of raw horse power
6 - 11 August 2002 will mark a new sporting event for individuals seeking a dynamic and exciting spectator sport. The European Open, funded and organised by Hildon English Natural Mineral Water, aims to introduce polo to a broader audience. Speed, danger and excitement are promised during The European Open. By bringing in a higher than normal level of professional polo, the tournament will be one of the most exciting games to be watched. The European Open will introduce a new approach to the game of polo with professional, fast action and spectator friendly rules. The brainchild of Hildon, this event aims to broaden polos appeal to a young, dynamic, sports motivated audience eager to be thrilled. Thus Hildon aims to bring polo to people who enjoy other sports such as tennis, horse-racing and Formula 1 and yet have never considered polo. Unlike some tournaments, where the polo is secondary to a social event, this is a fixture which will command the finest performances of the highest quality sport culminating in a Final which will match two of the most accomplished teams, and showcase some of the best in polo today. The winning team will be awarded the tournament trophy.

With entry handicap requirements of 20-24, only some of the best teams will be eligible to play. The level of play will be raised by ensuring that the teams' handicap requirement is higher than normal. The average top or 'High Goal' tournament requires a team handicap of 17-22, whereas The European Open will require a team handicap of 20-24. This means that the speed and excitement of the game will be considerably increased.

Mayor publishes report on Londons night time economy London Mayor Ken Livingstone has published a new consultants report on Londons night time economy in the 24 hour city. In the report he commissioned, Late Night London: Managing the Late Night Economy, the issues relating to London as a key night spot are outlined, including how London can retain its World City status and compete with other international rivals such as New York, Tokyo and major European cities. Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, said: London is one of the most exciting places in the world offering the best food, theatre and cultural activities and is a considerable draw for foreign tourists and UK visitors. We need to balance the needs of people enjoying Londons nightlife with those of local residents. London’s great night life is not restricted to Zone 1. Other parts of the city like Brixton, Ealing and Shoreditch also have a lot to offer. Obviously a late night culture has to be managed to meet the concerns of residents and provide personal safety and safer travel at night which are essential to a 24 hour city.

The report examines the night time economys financial benefits, disadvantages and how best to minimise the problems associated with a 24-hour culture. The Mayor has already worked to combat many of these problems by boosting tourism, putting more police on the streets, enforcing licensed minicabs and increasing the number and frequency of night buses. Other Mayoral initiatives include improving night time travel options, funding by his London Development Agency for culture led regeneration projects and Greater London Authority led work to tackle misuse of alcohol and drugs.
The study has already informed work on the draft London Plan, due out later this month. All parts of Londons public services have to work in partnership to maximise the economic benefits without compromising public safety and to limit damage to public spaces and anti social behaviour, which can impact on the perception of an area. The report also stresses that particular attention needs to be paid to the potential for developing the Business Improvement District model where businesses in a particular areas work together to improve the public space through organising and financing additional local management and services, which the Government has announced it is willing to support. In developing this, the Mayor has made headway already in policing and late night transport and will have an important role to play in developing a coordinated approach to the management of late night entertainment areas. The 24 hour economy currently employs over 300,000 people and half a million people enjoy London’s weekend nightlife every week.

It has been organised by Kat Wallace, Andrew Flynn (who lost his father to cancer last year) and Larissa Trew (whose mother died from the disease in March).

Mr Flynn said: With the fantastic support we have had from people who are taking part, we are sure this event will be a huge success. Hopefully we can raise buckets full of cash for Cancer Research UK. The fact that it is taking place on Fathers Day is very poignant for me. Although the family football fest is for charity, there will be no holding back as far as the players are concerned as they compete for the winners’ trophy.

Following the game, there will be a charity auction of highly sought after memorabilia. Lots include: signed balls from Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC; Chelseas Mark Bosnichs signed goalkeeping kit; Roberto di Matteos shirt from the last game of the 97/98 season; signed Dream Team kit; a football signed by Stefan Iverson; John Scales personal Liverpool shirt; and the item every footie fan lusts after a shirt signed by the current England squad. Cancer Research UK spokesman Martin McGlown said: It is wholly appropriate that Mens Cancer Awareness Month should be supported by this marvellous event. In the UK, prostate cancer is the second commonest cancer in men after lung cancer. One in 14 men will develop it in their lifetime. Testicular cancer, which mainly affects men of football playing age, accounts for around 1,700 new cases a year and incidence rates have increased by over 20 per cent over the past 10 years.

Hot food, a fully licensed bar and football with the stars what more could a father wish for on Fathers Day? Entrance to the Celebrity Charity 5 A Side is £5, from 11.30 am onwards. There is limited availability for teams of eight players to enter. The auction takes place at approximately 6pm and the football final will follow at 6.30 pm.

HAVANA IN MY HEART A CELEBRATION OF CUBAN PHOTOGRAPHY
June 13th / July 21st Cigars and Revolution; religion and music; the sea and the sun; beauty and decay - this is the colourful and turbulent story of Havana over the last 50 years told through the black and white images of its own people.

Havana In My Heart features over 120 vintage images - mostly unpublished - drawn from the works of internationally acclaimed photographers such as CONSTANTINO ARIAS, OSVALDO SALAS, ALBERTO KORDA, and PERFECTO ROMERO as well as their less well known peers. Digging deeper than the stereotypes of old American cars and women smoking cigars, this stunning new exhibition and book captures the heart and soul of this unique city through images from the second half of the 20th Century. The result is a balanced narrative of the culture and history of this incredible island nation.

This is an authentic picture of Cuba.
Havana In My Heart, The Exhibition Proud Central, London (June 13th July 21st). Havana In My Heart, The Book by Gareth Jenkins, published by M Q Publications (June 2002) RRP £20

Havana In My Heart is the culmination of over 10 years work by Gareth Jenkins. Having worked on a cultural project with Cuban artists in London in 1989, he was given a gift of 50 prints by Cuban photographers. The idea for a book was born. Many journeys later we can finally see the results of his research.

The exhibition simultaneously focuses on elements of Cuban society while also providing a broad narrative sweep of Cuban history: Divided into themes such as Street Scene, Revolution, Everyday & Ritual, Artists and Performers, the images guide us from Havana's early prosperity, when it was globally-renowned as a fashionable, cutting-edge city, through the Revolution of 1959; the Soviet presence; the withdrawal of the Soviets in '91 and the emergence of Cuba as a leading tourist destination for the 21st century.

Havana In My Heart was very much a labour of love for me comments Gareth Jenkins. "Since the very first time I visited Cuba in 1987, I have been captivated by the country. As the Cuban ethnologist Fernando Ortiz once remarked, Cuba is an ajiaco criollo, a Creole garlic stew in which everything from music to religion is mixed together. People of different races, cultures, and religions have been thrown together on this beautiful island, with its wonderful climate and have created a new society of mixtures. Not a melting pot, but a pot in which all the various ingredients retain their own identities, yet all intermingle.

The very medium of the show the black and white of the photography provides its own unique insight, a reminder of the isolation imposed on Cuba by the U.S. embargo which made colour film and processing facilities virtually unavailable for forty years. These poignant and prize-winning photographs have never before been brought together in either a major book or an exhibition. Havana in My Heart not only celebrates the formidable talent and skill of Cuban photographers but also tells the story of Havana's individual, irrepressible and vibrant spirit.

THE INTERNATIONAL CERAMICS FAIR & SEMINAR 21ST BIRTHDAY
14-17 June 2002, The Park Lane Hotel, Piccadilly London W1
Opening Times: llam-7pm
LOAN EXHIBITION: WINTERTHUR TURNS FIFTY

The International Ceramics Fair and Seminar is 21 this year. It has spawned many imitators but remains peerless in the quality of antique and contemporary ceramics and glass for sale and in the eminence of its dealers, lecturers and loan exhibition. 21 is a mature age for a fair, but The International Ceramics Fair & Seminar is ever youthful due to the enthusiasm it generates among exhibitors and visitors (witness the legendary queue on the first day which begins at dawn and sometimes the previous day) and the introduction of new areas such as Art Deco glass and contemporary British ceramics and glass. Its three part structure of Loan Exhibition, lecture series and specialist dealers showing finest pottery, porcelain and glass from 5000 BC to 2002 AD is a winning combination of commerce and academia.

Museum curators and specialist dealers share their knowledge and enthusiasm and together try to solve the many mysteries that inhabit the ceramics world. The lecture audiences have the rare opportunity to hear the latest findings about various kinds of ceramics and to see and buy similar examples at dealers' stands. Although known for rare antique ceramics and glass, the fair increasingly features the modern and contemporary periods. For instance, Adrian Sassoon stylishly mixes contemporary British studio ceramics and glass with antique French porcelain. The Mallett stand this year presents a rare opportunity to see and/or buy 30 / 40 items of Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass from the factory museum of Val Saint Lambert the Baccarat of Belgium.' Many are signed and dated.

LOAN EXHIBITION
The Loan Exhibition Winterthur Turns Fifty: Ceramic Rarities from an American Country Estate represents a vast collection of approximately 19,500 ceramics and glass dating from 1640 to 1860 at one of Americas favourite museums. Winterthur is located in 1000 acres of an American country estate near Wilmington, Delaware bequeathed by the du Ponts in the early 20th century. English ceramics ranging from the finest porcelain to modestly decorated earthenware and stoneware, as well as Chinese export porcelains such as a plate from George Washington's personal Order of the Cincinnati dinner service, are among the highlights of nearly 70 objects in the Loan Exhibition. Curator of the exhibition Mrs. Leslie Grigsby, Curator of Ceramics and Glass at Winterthur, will give a lecture on the collection. At the dealers' stands, there will be items for sale similar to those highlighted in the lecture and loan exhibition.

Antique Worcester is one of the most popular areas at the fair. In the Loan Exhibition is an exceptional example of English flower painting. The jar, made 1815 / 20 as part of a set with vases, is hand painted in enamel inside the cover Chamberlain Worcester Manufacturers to their Royal highness The Prince Regent and Duke of Cumberland. 18th century English, French, German and Austrian porcelain gain increasing rarity each year, as collectors and museums draw them into their collections and natural losses occur. However, The International Ceramics Fair and Seminar is the top source in the world for 18th and early 19th century Chelsea, Worcester, Bow, Sèvres, Meissen, Du Paquier and other classic names from the high point of European porcelain making.

Similarly, many landmarks in the history of pottery and porcelain making in China from 5000 BC through Han and Tang and Ming to 15th and 16th century porcelain made for the Imperial court to 18th century Chinese export are represented at the fair. Well served, too, are collectors of 17th to early 19th century English pottery and of 19th century pottery and porcelain, such as the top quality and rare examples of Mason's Ironstone and French faience at Valerie Howard.

14 Lectures about English, French, German, Russian, American and Chinese ceramics will be given by museum curators and other academics throughout the four days of the fair. For example, the style and links between the great tile traditions of China and the West will be discussed by Rose Kerr, Chief Curator of the Far Eastern Department at The Victoria and Albert Museum. In another lecture, Meredith Chilton, Chief Curator at The Gardiner Museum of Ceramics Art in Canada, will explore the social and historical context for the popular commedia dell arte porcelain figures made at a number of European factories

A Real Mother For Ya is the first one-person exhibition in the UK of American artist Liz Craft. Craft was included in the recent Americans exhibition at the Barbican and in Drive-by: new art from Los Angeles at South London Gallery in 1998. She lives and works in Los Angeles. A Real Mother For Ya is an exhibition in two spaces, at Sadie Coles HQ and a gallery off Carnaby Street. The central piece is a life size motorbike complete with pirate like skeleton rider and a headless biker chick. The bike is rustic in style a craft object of appropriated materials such as carved driftwood, pinecones and other debris from the frontier landscape, sculpted and then cast in bronze. Bikers can be seen as the 20th century version of the American cowboy, anti heroes representing freedom, rebellion, and the untamed frontier. By association, sentimental notions of the myth of the American west come into play an imagined landscape at the edge of civilisation where true adventures are still possible. Crafts sculptures often take the form of unlikely structural amalgamations of pop imagery that is elevated to mythical status through her interpretation of it. In this new sculpture, the infamous skeleton a motorcycle image updates the grand symbolism of bronze equestrian statuary, turning the traditional sense of order and civilization on its head.

CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE AT WADDESON MANOR
ANGUS FAIRHURST

A Couple of Differences Between Thinking and Feeling, 2001. A Couple of Differences Between Thinking and Feeling is new a sculpture by British artist Angus Fairhurst (born 1966). It is the youngest addition to the collection of contemporary sculpture which includes work by Stephen Cox, Elizabeth Frink and George Cutts. The seven foot high bronze sculpture depicts the unlikely but comfortable pairing of a gorilla carrying a huge fish under its right arm. The sculptures form and stance reference the tradition of civic bronze statuary but turn the traditional sense of pomp and authority on its head. I wanted to make a classical sculpture which has the lightness of a cartoon. The relationship between the gorilla and fish is ambiguous, one represents thinking and the other represents feeling. One begins where the other ends or they are the same thing. One is there for the other to function, but a protective relationship is also an interdependent one. You cant have the material without the thought, and you cant have a friend without an enemy. A solid object cannot look like it might just disappear if you stopped thinking about it, but a cartoon seems light enough that it might just do that. (Angus Fairhurst) Angus Fairhurst trained at Canterbury Art College and Goldsmiths College, London. He exhibited alongside contemporaries such as Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Sarah Lucas and others in Freeze (1988), Modern Medicine and Gambler (1991) and the survey exhibition of young British art, Brilliant!, at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (1995). Fairhurst has also been included in the major group shows Some Went Mad, Some Ran Away at the Serpentine Gallery (1994). Apocalypse at The Royal Academy, London (2000) Century City at Tate Modern (2001) and Casino, Gent (2001). His most recent one person exhibitions were at Kunsthalle St Gallen (2001) and at the Spacex Gallery in Exeter (2001). He is represented by Sadie Coles HQ in London. A Couple of Differences Between Thinking and Feeling was cast in bronze by Pangolin Foundry near Stroud, weighs about 1 tonne and is the final casting in an edition of three.

Award Winning Chef Kuldeep Singh to launch second West End venture in May. Kuldeep Singh is to launch Chowki, his second West End venture, at a cost of £1million next month. Destined to be a hit, Chowki will be a trendy venue with 150 covers; an unpretentious and accessible restaurant with prices as low as £2.50 for starters and £5.95 for a main course. Singh, former head chef of Soho Spice, Pukkabar and the Red Fort, set up Mela in 2000 on Shaftsbury Avenue which won him Indian Restaurant of Year in 2001. After Melas amazing success Singh visualised the concept of Chowki. Chowki, a wooden elevated platform atop which food is placed for family meals, will specialise in serving Indian food home style in a very warm and informal set up, available to everyone through its affordable prices but stylish surroundings. Each month the menu will feature traditional cuisines from three different regions of India, giving visitors a reason to go back again and again to try new dishes.

As well as a vibrant and chick eating area Chowki will have a separate bar with an array of cocktails and beverages, as well as a small non-alcoholic menu. Situated in the basement, the bar area is ideal for private functions and great to retire to for light drinks after a succulent meal. Gaurav Chawla, who previously worked at Mela and Taj Mahal Hotel, India, will oversee the front of house operation with a team of 20 floor and bar staff and 10 kitchen staff. The restaurant interior was designed and built by Intigra. Design and headed by Toni Ghani Jnr. Ghani has worked for a number of high end design houses in London and worked on Bhatti in Covent Garden (London) and The Grand (Bedfordshire). Intigra also designed and made the stylish bespoke furniture.

Mr Toni Ghani Snr says: We have designed and built a number of restaurants around the UK, but Chowki will become a landmark for us not only because of its location and the high profile of its owners but also because we have been given an open brief to do as we like with no constraints. Chowki is just one leap away from Piccadilly Circus on Denman Street and will be open between 12 noon and 12 midnight when it starts operating in May this year. Kuldeep Singh says: I am very excited about this new restaurant. We have all worked very hard to make it special for our customers and we hope it is as successful as Mela. Singh adds: Chowki has demanded more effort, money and input because it is harder to create real traditional Indian cooking. Mela was easy so I'm taking my time with Chowki.

The Royal Academy of Music is delighted to announce that the first
Honorary Doctorates to be awarded in its 180-year history will be
presented to Sir Colin Davis and Sir Elton John at this years
graduation ceremony, to be held on 3rd July 2002. In 1999 the
Academy was admitted to the University of London as a full
college, allowing the institution to award University of London
degrees up to PhD level as well as award honorary degrees and
doctorates to individuals who have made a significant contribution
to musical life.

Sir Colin Davis is Principal Conductor of the LSO, Principal Guest
Conductor of the New York Philharmonic and Honorary Conductor
of the Dresden Staatskapelle, as well as International Chair of
Conducting Studies at the Royal Academy of Music. Sir Colin
demonstrates a tireless enthusiasm for his work with Academy
orchestras, and he makes considerable donations of his own
valuable time. His many memorable performances have included
two Mozart da Ponte operas and Sibelius symphonies in the
Academy's free on Fridays lunchtime concert series and at the
Royal Festival Hall. Sir Colin has conducted for three sets of live
Academy CD recordings: Così fan tutte and Le Nozze di Figaro
with London Royal Schools Opera and a Mozart Gala Concert from
the Royal Festival Hall. Professor Curtis Price, Principal of the Academy, said: I am
delighted that the University of London, through the Academy, has
decided to honour Sir Colin, one of greatest conductors of our age.
He has enriched our musical culture for so many years, both on
the professional stage and through his complete devotion to
nurturing music in young people.

Sir Elton John spent most of his teenage years as an Exhibitioner
at the Junior Academy, the Royal Academy of Musics programme
for talented young musicians. He says: I have always regarded my
training at the Royal Academy of Music as vitally important to the
development of my career as a popular musician. Sir Elton has
returned to the Academy on several occasions and has been
generous with his advice for current students. He gave a concert for
students and staff at the Academy in 1998, preceded by a candid
interview covering all aspects of his career a great opportunity for
students to learn tricks of the trade from one of todays most
successful musicians, an artist of international iconic proportions.
Professor Curtis Price, Principal of the Academy, said: Elton
John, who is one of the most gifted and influential musicians in the
world today, laid the foundations of his career at the Academy. So
it is entirely fitting that he should be receiving the highest honour
awarded by the University of London.

Terrence Higgins Trust 20th Anniversary
20 years ago, no one had heard of AIDS, and the HIV virus still hadnt
been discovered. But today, there are around 33,500 people living with
HIV in the UK, and the disease has gone from a standing start to claim
14,000 lives in this country alone. Thursday 4th July marks the 20th
anniversary of the death of Terry Higgins, the first person in the UK to
be identified as having died with AIDS. After his death, a group of his
friends formed the Terrence Higgins Trust to provide information and
support for people affected by this devastating illness. Today, Terrence
Higgins Trust is the UKs leading HIV and AIDS charity, helping over
15,000 people every year.

* With many more people now living a fulfilling life with HIV instead
of facing a death with AIDS, what does it mean to live every day with an
illness which is still highly stigmatised?
* Volunteering for Terrence Higgins Trust 20 years on we still need
buddies, mentors, administrative support, fundraisers and help line
operators. Our volunteers can tell you what makes them give up their time
to help people with HIV
* Raising money for an unpopular cause when 86% of the population
wont give money to HIV and AIDS, how do we persuade people to give?
* The continued rise of other STIs young people dont consider
themselves to be at risk from HIV, but cases of STIs such as chlamydia
amongst young women have doubled since 1995
* The prejudice and discrimination that still surrounds HIV, and how
we are working to change peoples perceptions
* What's changed in the doctor/patient relationship how THT and
people with HIV have worked with clinicians and drug companies to develop
effective treatment and care

Warning of GP recruitment crisis for London
London could suffer from a massive shortage of General Practitioners because a large number face imminent retirement. With more than a quarter of London GPs currently over 55 years of age, Department of Health representatives today warned that NHS targets for recruitment and retention could fall short of the number needed in the capital. NHS targets plan for an extra 255 GPs by April 2004, yet it is believed that around 2000 more GPs will be needed over the next decade. Members of the Access to Primary Care Investigative Committee heard that a number of innovative measures to recruit and retain GPs have been considered by a Pan-London Action Group. These include overseas recruitment and changing GP locums to substantive posts by offering more flexible working. The Action Group was also looking at offering enticing packages to GPs in a bid to keep them working in London. Around 50 percent of GPs are trained in the capital, yet only a small percentage works there afterwards. London Assembly Member Elizabeth Howlett, Chair of the Access to Primary Care Investigative Committee, said: ‘We have been assured that these measures will address the problem, but it is imperative that this potential recruitment problem be tackled before it reaches crisis point for the 7.3 million people in London.’

SeaPoint by Cliona Harmey and Dennis McNulty

Variablemedia is pleased to announce SeaPoint, the first project to be
hosted at their www.variablemedia.org site. SeaPoint is a collaborative Internet project by artist Cliona Harmey and electronic musician Dennis McNulty. Starting on June 9, 2002 with updates occurring daily, SeaPoint will run for a period of 28 days. During each day of the project Harmey will record a 10 second digital video sample of the Irish Sea from a fixed location on shore at Seapoint on the south Dublin coast. She will process the days recorded images into a video animation file and allocate this file a number and description from the Beaufort Scale. The Beaufort Scale (for use at sea) measures wind speed by observing the visual effects of wind on water and allocates a number ranging from 0 for calm conditions to 12 for a hurricane. This measurement for the days images, combined with various chance procedures, will be applied to the concurrent audio recording in a resampling process devised by McNulty. These audio files will then be recombined with the video animation as a short Flash film.

The Beaufort Scale (for use at sea) is an adaptation of an original
scale devised in 1806 by Irish born Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort. The
visual descriptions of the water, used by this adaptation, are highly
poetic e.g. #1 Scale like ripples, #2 Small, short wavelets with glassy crests. The existence of this process reflects an attempt to understand natural phenomena through classification. Through the interplay of recordings, written classifications and digital processes, SeaPoint will evolve as an open ended document, which blurs any strict categorization of nature or technology.

Cliona Harmey is an Irish artist who works with a variety of media such as video installation, photography and the Internet. Her current
practice is primarily concerned with the recording and resampling of the minutiae of mutable natural phenomena. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and projects Internationally, including; Tis, State of the Art Gallery, Ithaca, New York; Thaw 01, The Institute of Communication and Culture, Iowa; Vdor Break 21, Llubijana, Slovenia; The Reading Room, Catalyst Arts, Belfast. Cliona recently completed a residency at the Inkshop Printmaking Center Ithaca, New York. She lives in Dublin and works as a lecturer in Digital Media at Dunlaoghaire Institute of Art,Design and Technology.

Dennis McNulty works with sound in a variety of contexts. He has been
making electronic music as half of 'Decal' for almost a decade and has
developed numerous sound and music software and hardware systems.
Previous projects include, Decompression 2 for The Captain's Road
exhibition, Dublin; the development of an algorithm for generating
non-repetitive rhythmic streams based on Markov chain analysis, for an
installation by Ralf Nuhn and an audio performance using a Nanoloop
Gameboy Sequencer at one of the Dublin Art and Technology Associations
monthly DATA events. Decal have just released their third album '404 not found' on Planet Mu records.

Michelle Deignan and Simon Goodwin created Variablemedia in 2001 to
explore notions of place, process, temporality and artistic practice.
This London (UK) based organisation is now initiating a series of web
projects involving internationally based artists. Artists will occupy
the www.variablemedia.org site for a period of between one and three
months. This empty space is available for them to change, update and add to during their project's run; a criterion of these projects is that the artist's present work over time. Variablemedia.org aims to present the artists work in an unmediated form; all explanatory material and archives will be held at the sister www.variablemedia.info site. Following SeaPoint is a project by Edward Dorrian and Sally Morfill, which will commence on July 7th 2002.

The American in Britain club working in association with American in Britain magazine came about to act as a home away from home for Americans moving to the UK. One of the great challenges put before many who find themselves in a new job, location is finding a point of contact that can help with important thinks like baby sitters, schools, colleges, plumbers, furniture hire and so on. You might be a first time visitor or a regular traveller to our capital. What better way to enjoy a city than with the people that know it best? Our principle aim is to provide a point of contact for our members (regular visitors) and a means for those on a one off visit to make valuable contacts with locals who will aid your stay in the city. Education and research are vital to planning Londons future outlined how research by the higher education sector can help in preparing London for a huge surge in economic growth as well as enhancing and retaining its position as an international economic force. Much of the Mayors London Plan due out early next month, is underpinned by statistics released in the Mayors report Planning for Londons Growth, which identifies the need for a cohesive strategy to integrate and include transport, housing, planning, skills, employment, economic growth and equality and opportunity for all.

Speaking earlier today at Westminster Kingsway College, at the Researching London conference, a joint event with the leading business organization London First, the Mayor outlined the valuable contribution research undertaken by academic institutions can make in influencing the capitals future, through feeding into the Mayors various policies and strategies including the London Plan. Ken Livingstone said: London is undergoing growth that is without parallel in any other part of the UK and in any other major city in Europe. Londons infrastructure, and the citys planning and other policies must reflect the need to accommodate this growth in a planned way. My London Plan will provide a vital framework to accommodate Londons successful and continued development. Addressing representatives of the education sector the Mayor also called for higher education institutions to communicate with his new GLA Economics unit, a joint venture between the Greater London Authority, Transport for London and the London Development Agency. The aim of the unit is to collect, analyse, forecast and report on the economy of London to provide economic intelligence and key data to inform sector policies and strategies.

The Mayor said: It is vitally important that Londons academics and researchers link up and communicate with us as we need to be able to inform them of our research priorities and they need to inform us about the areas of research we need to develop, in order to ensure that we are fully prepared for the increased demand. The changes taking place in London are the biggest regional issue in Britain, and we need to ensure we have the research to respond to these changes.’ Jo Valentine, the Chief Operating Officer at London First, said: We are delighted that so many of our corporate members are joining today's conference with the Mayor. Commercial enterprises, just as much as London's government, need accurate knowledge on which to plan for the future. To keep London ahead we need to understand its internal dynamics as much as its international competitive position.

Professor David Rhind, Convenor, London Higher Education Consortium and Vice Chancellor, City University, said: London’s 40 universities and colleges have unrivalled research capacity. We are pleased to harness their knowledge for the benefit of London and Londoners. This is a welcome opportunity to develop new networks for researchers. Londons education facilities have long been a draw for students from all over the world, with universities and research facilities that are internationally acknowledged. It is anticipated that if the Mayors strategies can meet the demand for improved public services, it will also help fill the capital’s long term unemployment. Such growth will also create a demand for a well educated and skilled staff, with the expected population growth (700,000 by 2016) putting an additional strain on the capitals already pressurized education resources.

Wembley clears final hurdle
Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London has welcomed the news that Wembley National Stadium Limited has signed a heads of agreement contract with a German bank that will secure the financing of the new national football stadium at Wembley. Securing the finance was the last remaining hurdle for the Wembley project to clear. This deal should put a stop to the medias endless recycling of old news about the management difficulties in the early days of the previous Wembley project. Football needs the new Wembley as much as the deprived area of North West London that the stadium will deliver an economic boost to. I am pleased to have been able to play my part in getting the project back on track by making sure that all the necessary transport arrangements were in place. This deal should finally put a stop to the negative media coverage surrounding the project. Just as all eyes focus on Japan and Korea, we can finally look forward to having superb new national stadium of our own, capable of hosting major events like the World Cup.

Theatre needs a quick flash!
Chichester Festival Theatre is desperate for a flash and quick!
The stage management team for the musical Up on the Roof, which is set in the 70s and opens in the Minerva Theatre next month, is trying to track down flashcubes for an instamatic camera, which is to be used on stage. Chief Electrician Chris Scott said:
The period camera we have is a Kodak Instamatic (model 56X) although I seem to remember the flashcubes seemed to fit all. We require a minimum of 20 complete cubes or equivalent (ie 80 flashes). The disposable flashcubes were pushed into a locating point on top of the camera and had 4 faces, with a flash bulb on each face. We are having great difficulty in finding these cubes and would be very grateful to anyone who has any suggestions that might help us in our search. Directed by Angus Jackson Up on the Roof is a bittersweet musical comedy. Choc a block with fabulous close-harmony a capella singing, the cast performs renditions of some of the most celebrated hits from 70s pop including songs by Gloria Gaynor; Three Degrees Frankie Valli and Johnny Mathis. Following five students from graduation night to their subsequent reunions five, and then ten years down the line, this is a funny and touching portrait of friends reunited.
Anyone who can help should telephone Vicky Edwards in the Theatres press office on 01243 784437.

BUSINESS NETWORKING EVENTS/RESEPTIONS PARTIES AND PROMOTIONS HAPPING EACH MONTH ON THE LONDON DIARY CALENDAR

The Future of the UK Economy" with guest speakers, Jeremy Peat, Chief Economist Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc & John Bercow MP, Shadow Chief Secretary. Group Economics UK Budget Commentary. Overview: The main surprise in this year's Budget was that there were no big surprises. In an election year, the Chancellor might have been expected to pull something out of the hat. Instead, he announced a wholly predictable £4.5 billion package of measures, focused on his favourite themes - improving productivity and increasing opportunities for families, pensioners, the low-paid and communities. He also introduced a number of environmental measures covering fuel duties and vehicle taxes, mainly as outlined in last November's Pre-Budget Report (PBR). Several announcements were in the form of proposals, rather than firm commitments.

The government's fiscal position is forecast to remain at least as tight as expected in last November's PBR. This is against the background of a healthy economic performance, with forecasts for growth, inflation and trade in line with our own UK Quarterly Economic Update. Budget details: The Chancellor announced a £4.5 billion package, including £1.7 billion-worth of measures for motorists set out in November's PBR. As widely leaked in advance, the 10 pence lower-level tax threshold is being widened, at an annual cost of £1 billion. The children's tax credit will be slightly more generous than announced in the PBR, and maternity/paternity benefits will be extended. Education and the health service will receive an extra £1 billion each in the next three years.

A number of measures were directed at companies. All the recommendations made by Paul Myners in his review of institutional investment will be implemented. Proposals for a new regime for providing tax relief on intellectual property and goodwill will be published, and there will be further consultation on tax relief for companies on the disposal of substantial shareholdings. The government will also consult on extending research and development tax credits to larger companies. The Treasury is forecasting current budget surpluses of £23 billion in 2000-01 and £17 billion in 2001-02, up from forecasts of £16.6 billion and £16 billion respectively in November's PBR. Surpluses in subsequent years are forecast to be at least as high as in the PBR.

A similar improvement is anticipated for public sector net borrowing in the current tax year, with a net repayment of £16.4 billion expected, compared with a forecast net repayment of £10 billion in the PBR. Net borrowing in later years is expected to be no higher than forecast in the PBR. The large net repayment in 2000-01, alongside the proceeds of the recent mobile phone licence auction, will allow the government to repay £34 billion of debt this year. As the Chancellor proudly announced, this is more debt repaid by one government in one year than by all governments together in the past 50 years.

The government remains on track to meet its golden rule over the forecast period, which allows it to borrow over the economic cycle only to invest - a policy criticised by the International Monetary Fund last week as being insufficiently prudent. Net public sector investment is projected to grow rapidly in 2001 and 2002. In conjunction with slower economic growth, this is expected to lead to small budget deficits at the latter end of the forecast period.

Net debt is forecast to fall to 31.8% as a proportion of national income this financial year, down from 44% in 1997. It is forecast to fall to 30% by 2005-06. The Chancellor confirmed during his speech that the Bank of England's inflation target would remain at 2.5% until at least 2005-06. He doubtless hopes that his restraint will allow the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee room to cut interest rates further this year.
