An unusual Image Consultancy which uses the branding process to help people achieve their goals, social or professional. Jenny has sourced and works alongside a number of amazing professionals who are hard to find. They are the people that will make the biggest difference to your required outcome. Her expertise is in diagnosing what are the crucial areas to spend your money and time on. This is what really will make the difference to your options and your future life and it mostly is not the way you dress. Many of the things she suggests will not cost serious money (books, tapes, workshops, clubs), but some of them do (possibly your teeth or your voice). It is up to you how much of this valuable advice you take on board and do something about. Jenny will be there for you whenever you need that extra bit of advice or need a particular new service in the future. She charges a modest flat rate for what is usually a one-off consultation and is extremely well connected to professionals in London. Colour analysis plays a very small part of the exercise but can make quite a difference to some people when choosing clothes.

Mayor publishes report on Londons night time economy London Mayor Ken Livingstone has published a new consultants report on Londons night time economy in the 24 hour city. In the report he commissioned, Late Night London: Managing the Late Night Economy, the issues relating to London as a key night spot are outlined, including how London can retain its World City status and compete with other international rivals such as New York, Tokyo and major European cities. Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, said: London is one of the most exciting places in the world offering the best food, theatre and cultural activities and is a considerable draw for foreign tourists and UK visitors. We need to balance the needs of people enjoying Londons nightlife with those of local residents. London’s great night life is not restricted to Zone 1. Other parts of the city like Brixton, Ealing and Shoreditch also have a lot to offer. Obviously a late night culture has to be managed to meet the concerns of residents and provide personal safety and safer travel at night which are essential to a 24 hour city.
The report examines the night time economys financial benefits, disadvantages and how best to minimise the problems associated with a 24-hour culture. The Mayor has already worked to combat many of these problems by boosting tourism, putting more police on the streets, enforcing licensed minicabs and increasing the number and frequency of night buses. Other Mayoral initiatives include improving night time travel options, funding by his London Development Agency for culture led regeneration projects and Greater London Authority led work to tackle misuse of alcohol and drugs.
The study has already informed work on the draft London Plan, due out later this month. All parts of Londons public services have to work in partnership to maximise the economic benefits without compromising public safety and to limit damage to public spaces and anti social behaviour, which can impact on the perception of an area. The report also stresses that particular attention needs to be paid to the potential for developing the Business Improvement District model where businesses in a particular areas work together to improve the public space through organising and financing additional local management and services, which the Government has announced it is willing to support. In developing this, the Mayor has made headway already in policing and late night transport and will have an important role to play in developing a coordinated approach to the management of late night entertainment areas. The 24 hour economy currently employs over 300,000 people and half a million people enjoy London’s weekend nightlife every week.

THE WORLD Cup may be reaching fever pitch in Japan and South Korea but closer to home the beautiful game is living up to its name with a celebrity tournament supported by Frank Lampard, members of the cast from SKY TVs Dream Team, Denise van Outen and the girls from FHM. Taking place on Fathers Day (Sunday June 16) in Barnes, south West London, the event is raising funds for Cancer Research UK which has designated June as Mens Cancer Month. Joining Chelseas Frank Lampard on the day will be Leicester Citys Frank Sinclair and members of the cast from Mike Bassett England Manager. Television presenter and cover girl Ivana Horvat recently voted among the worlds 100 sexiest women and fellow beauty Ebony will be leading the cheers from the sidelines before hopefully taking to the turf later on.
Denise van Outen will be roaring on her boyfriend, Richard Traviss, who is captaining a team from the nightclub he owns, Browns in Covent Garden. Hunky actor Jez Edwards, who plays Danny in Holby City, will also be in the dugout and will later be hosting an auction of football memorabilia. The Cancer Research UK 5 a side tournament kicks off around noon at Barn Elms Sports Centre, Barnes. It has been organised by Kat Wallace, Andrew Flynn (who lost his father to cancer last year) and Larissa Trew (whose mother died from the disease in March).
Mr Flynn said: With the fantastic support we have had from people who are taking part, we are sure this event will be a huge success. Hopefully we can raise buckets full of cash for Cancer Research UK. The fact that it is taking place on Fathers Day is very poignant for me. Although the family football fest is for charity, there will be no holding back as far as the players are concerned as they compete for the winners’ trophy.
Following the game, there will be a charity auction of highly sought after memorabilia. Lots include: signed balls from Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC; Chelseas Mark Bosnichs signed goalkeeping kit; Roberto di Matteos shirt from the last game of the 97/98 season; signed Dream Team kit; a football signed by Stefan Iverson; John Scales personal Liverpool shirt; and the item every footie fan lusts after a shirt signed by the current England squad. Cancer Research UK spokesman Martin McGlown said: It is wholly appropriate that Mens Cancer Awareness Month should be supported by this marvellous event. In the UK, prostate cancer is the second commonest cancer in men after lung cancer. One in 14 men will develop it in their lifetime. Testicular cancer, which mainly affects men of football playing age, accounts for around 1,700 new cases a year and incidence rates have increased by over 20 per cent over the past 10 years.
Hot food, a fully licensed bar and football with the stars what more could a father wish for on Fathers Day? Entrance to the Celebrity Charity 5 A Side is £5, from 11.30 am onwards. There is limited availability for teams of eight players to enter. The auction takes place at approximately 6pm and the football final will follow at 6.30 pm.

Making and developing business contacts: Whatever your business and service, it is important to have your business on the forefront of business portals to attract attention. A portal can be any organisation that firstly can arrange a link to your web site or can provide space on its web site to carry what you have to offer with contact details. The organisation must also have a large traffic of people that visit each day and a regular means of communication with those who have opted to receive information (newsletter/updates) As a member of the organisation, you should also have the option to update your information without additional cost, as and when required. If you are able to attend events to make direct contacts with clients, the business portal should beadle to provide you with a list of activity. As a member of London Diary WWW marketing club, you will have all the above. For a membership break down, click on Membership Options

This is an authentic picture of Cuba.
Havana In My Heart is the culmination of over 10 years work by Gareth Jenkins. Having worked on a cultural project with Cuban artists in London in 1989, he was given a gift of 50 prints by Cuban photographers. The idea for a book was born. Many journeys later we can finally see the results of his research.
The exhibition simultaneously focuses on elements of Cuban society while also providing a broad narrative sweep of Cuban history: Divided into themes such as Street Scene, Revolution, Everyday & Ritual, Artists and Performers, the images guide us from Havana's early prosperity, when it was globally-renowned as a fashionable, cutting-edge city, through the Revolution of 1959; the Soviet presence; the withdrawal of the Soviets in '91 and the emergence of Cuba as a leading tourist destination for the 21st century.
Havana In My Heart was very much a labour of love for me comments Gareth Jenkins. "Since the very first time I visited Cuba in 1987, I have been captivated by the country. As the Cuban ethnologist Fernando Ortiz once remarked, Cuba is an ajiaco criollo, a Creole garlic stew in which everything from music to religion is mixed together. People of different races, cultures, and religions have been thrown together on this beautiful island, with its wonderful climate and have created a new society of mixtures. Not a melting pot, but a pot in which all the various ingredients retain their own identities, yet all intermingle.
The very medium of the show the black and white of the photography provides its own unique insight, a reminder of the isolation imposed on Cuba by the U.S. embargo which made colour film and processing facilities virtually unavailable for forty years. These poignant and prize-winning photographs have never before been brought together in either a major book or an exhibition. Havana in My Heart not only celebrates the formidable talent and skill of Cuban photographers but also tells the story of Havana's individual, irrepressible and vibrant spirit.News up-date Posted Wednesday, June 5, 2002 by london-diary

Mr Toni Ghani Snr says: We have designed and built a number of restaurants around the UK, but Chowki will become a landmark for us not only because of its location and the high profile of its owners but also because we have been given an open brief to do as we like with no constraints. Chowki is just one leap away from Piccadilly Circus on Denman Street and will be open between 12 noon and 12 midnight when it starts operating in May this year. Kuldeep Singh says: I am very excited about this new restaurant. We have all worked very hard to make it special for our customers and we hope it is as successful as Mela. Singh adds: Chowki has demanded more effort, money and input because it is harder to create real traditional Indian cooking. Mela was easy so I'm taking my time with Chowki.News up-date Posted Tuesday, June 4, 2002 by london-diary
The Royal Academy of Music is delighted to announce that the first
Honorary Doctorates to be awarded in its 180-year history will be
presented to Sir Colin Davis and Sir Elton John at this years
graduation ceremony, to be held on 3rd July 2002. In 1999 the
Academy was admitted to the University of London as a full
college, allowing the institution to award University of London
degrees up to PhD level as well as award honorary degrees and
doctorates to individuals who have made a significant contribution
to musical life.
Sir Colin Davis is Principal Conductor of the LSO, Principal Guest
Conductor of the New York Philharmonic and Honorary Conductor
of the Dresden Staatskapelle, as well as International Chair of
Conducting Studies at the Royal Academy of Music. Sir Colin
demonstrates a tireless enthusiasm for his work with Academy
orchestras, and he makes considerable donations of his own
valuable time. His many memorable performances have included
two Mozart da Ponte operas and Sibelius symphonies in the
Academy's free on Fridays lunchtime concert series and at the
Royal Festival Hall. Sir Colin has conducted for three sets of live
Academy CD recordings: Così fan tutte and Le Nozze di Figaro
with London Royal Schools Opera and a Mozart Gala Concert from
the Royal Festival Hall. Professor Curtis Price, Principal of the Academy, said: I am
delighted that the University of London, through the Academy, has
decided to honour Sir Colin, one of greatest conductors of our age.
He has enriched our musical culture for so many years, both on
the professional stage and through his complete devotion to
nurturing music in young people.
Sir Elton John spent most of his teenage years as an Exhibitioner
at the Junior Academy, the Royal Academy of Musics programme
for talented young musicians. He says: I have always regarded my
training at the Royal Academy of Music as vitally important to the
development of my career as a popular musician. Sir Elton has
returned to the Academy on several occasions and has been
generous with his advice for current students. He gave a concert for
students and staff at the Academy in 1998, preceded by a candid
interview covering all aspects of his career a great opportunity for
students to learn tricks of the trade from one of todays most
successful musicians, an artist of international iconic proportions.
Professor Curtis Price, Principal of the Academy, said: Elton
John, who is one of the most gifted and influential musicians in the
world today, laid the foundations of his career at the Academy. So
it is entirely fitting that he should be receiving the highest honour
awarded by the University of London.

Terrence Higgins Trust 20th Anniversary
20 years ago, no one had heard of AIDS, and the HIV virus still hadnt
been discovered. But today, there are around 33,500 people living with
HIV in the UK, and the disease has gone from a standing start to claim
14,000 lives in this country alone. Thursday 4th July marks the 20th
anniversary of the death of Terry Higgins, the first person in the UK to
be identified as having died with AIDS. After his death, a group of his
friends formed the Terrence Higgins Trust to provide information and
support for people affected by this devastating illness. Today, Terrence
Higgins Trust is the UKs leading HIV and AIDS charity, helping over
15,000 people every year.
* With many more people now living a fulfilling life with HIV instead
of facing a death with AIDS, what does it mean to live every day with an
illness which is still highly stigmatised?
* Volunteering for Terrence Higgins Trust 20 years on we still need
buddies, mentors, administrative support, fundraisers and help line
operators. Our volunteers can tell you what makes them give up their time
to help people with HIV
* Raising money for an unpopular cause when 86% of the population
wont give money to HIV and AIDS, how do we persuade people to give?
* The continued rise of other STIs young people dont consider
themselves to be at risk from HIV, but cases of STIs such as chlamydia
amongst young women have doubled since 1995
* The prejudice and discrimination that still surrounds HIV, and how
we are working to change peoples perceptions
* What's changed in the doctor/patient relationship how THT and
people with HIV have worked with clinicians and drug companies to develop
effective treatment and care

Warning of GP recruitment crisis for London
London could suffer from a massive shortage of General Practitioners because a large number face imminent retirement. With more than a quarter of London GPs currently over 55 years of age, Department of Health representatives today warned that NHS targets for recruitment and retention could fall short of the number needed in the capital. NHS targets plan for an extra 255 GPs by April 2004, yet it is believed that around 2000 more GPs will be needed over the next decade. Members of the Access to Primary Care Investigative Committee heard that a number of innovative measures to recruit and retain GPs have been considered by a Pan-London Action Group. These include overseas recruitment and changing GP locums to substantive posts by offering more flexible working. The Action Group was also looking at offering enticing packages to GPs in a bid to keep them working in London. Around 50 percent of GPs are trained in the capital, yet only a small percentage works there afterwards. London Assembly Member Elizabeth Howlett, Chair of the Access to Primary Care Investigative Committee, said: ‘We have been assured that these measures will address the problem, but it is imperative that this potential recruitment problem be tackled before it reaches crisis point for the 7.3 million people in London.’

SeaPoint by Cliona Harmey and Dennis McNulty
Variablemedia is pleased to announce SeaPoint, the first project to be
hosted at their www.variablemedia.org site. SeaPoint is a collaborative Internet project by artist Cliona Harmey and electronic musician Dennis McNulty. Starting on June 9, 2002 with updates occurring daily, SeaPoint will run for a period of 28 days. During each day of the project Harmey will record a 10 second digital video sample of the Irish Sea from a fixed location on shore at Seapoint on the south Dublin coast. She will process the days recorded images into a video animation file and allocate this file a number and description from the Beaufort Scale. The Beaufort Scale (for use at sea) measures wind speed by observing the visual effects of wind on water and allocates a number ranging from 0 for calm conditions to 12 for a hurricane. This measurement for the days images, combined with various chance procedures, will be applied to the concurrent audio recording in a resampling process devised by McNulty. These audio files will then be recombined with the video animation as a short Flash film.
The Beaufort Scale (for use at sea) is an adaptation of an original
scale devised in 1806 by Irish born Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort. The
visual descriptions of the water, used by this adaptation, are highly
poetic e.g. #1 Scale like ripples, #2 Small, short wavelets with glassy crests. The existence of this process reflects an attempt to understand natural phenomena through classification. Through the interplay of recordings, written classifications and digital processes, SeaPoint will evolve as an open ended document, which blurs any strict categorization of nature or technology.
Cliona Harmey is an Irish artist who works with a variety of media such as video installation, photography and the Internet. Her current
practice is primarily concerned with the recording and resampling of the minutiae of mutable natural phenomena. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and projects Internationally, including; Tis, State of the Art Gallery, Ithaca, New York; Thaw 01, The Institute of Communication and Culture, Iowa; Vdor Break 21, Llubijana, Slovenia; The Reading Room, Catalyst Arts, Belfast. Cliona recently completed a residency at the Inkshop Printmaking Center Ithaca, New York. She lives in Dublin and works as a lecturer in Digital Media at Dunlaoghaire Institute of Art,Design and Technology.
Dennis McNulty works with sound in a variety of contexts. He has been
making electronic music as half of 'Decal' for almost a decade and has
developed numerous sound and music software and hardware systems.
Previous projects include, Decompression 2 for The Captain's Road
exhibition, Dublin; the development of an algorithm for generating
non-repetitive rhythmic streams based on Markov chain analysis, for an
installation by Ralf Nuhn and an audio performance using a Nanoloop
Gameboy Sequencer at one of the Dublin Art and Technology Associations
monthly DATA events. Decal have just released their third album '404 not found' on Planet Mu records.
Michelle Deignan and Simon Goodwin created Variablemedia in 2001 to
explore notions of place, process, temporality and artistic practice.
This London (UK) based organisation is now initiating a series of web
projects involving internationally based artists. Artists will occupy
the www.variablemedia.org site for a period of between one and three
months. This empty space is available for them to change, update and add to during their project's run; a criterion of these projects is that the artist's present work over time. Variablemedia.org aims to present the artists work in an unmediated form; all explanatory material and archives will be held at the sister www.variablemedia.info site. Following SeaPoint is a project by Edward Dorrian and Sally Morfill, which will commence on July 7th 2002.

Education and research are vital to planning Londons future outlined how research by the higher education sector can help in preparing London for a huge surge in economic growth as well as enhancing and retaining its position as an international economic force. Much of the Mayors London Plan due out early next month, is underpinned by statistics released in the Mayors report Planning for Londons Growth, which identifies the need for a cohesive strategy to integrate and include transport, housing, planning, skills, employment, economic growth and equality and opportunity for all.
Speaking earlier today at Westminster Kingsway College, at the Researching London conference, a joint event with the leading business organization London First, the Mayor outlined the valuable contribution research undertaken by academic institutions can make in influencing the capitals future, through feeding into the Mayors various policies and strategies including the London Plan. Ken Livingstone said: London is undergoing growth that is without parallel in any other part of the UK and in any other major city in Europe. Londons infrastructure, and the citys planning and other policies must reflect the need to accommodate this growth in a planned way. My London Plan will provide a vital framework to accommodate Londons successful and continued development. Addressing representatives of the education sector the Mayor also called for higher education institutions to communicate with his new GLA Economics unit, a joint venture between the Greater London Authority, Transport for London and the London Development Agency. The aim of the unit is to collect, analyse, forecast and report on the economy of London to provide economic intelligence and key data to inform sector policies and strategies.
The Mayor said: It is vitally important that Londons academics and researchers link up and communicate with us as we need to be able to inform them of our research priorities and they need to inform us about the areas of research we need to develop, in order to ensure that we are fully prepared for the increased demand. The changes taking place in London are the biggest regional issue in Britain, and we need to ensure we have the research to respond to these changes.’ Jo Valentine, the Chief Operating Officer at London First, said: We are delighted that so many of our corporate members are joining today's conference with the Mayor. Commercial enterprises, just as much as London's government, need accurate knowledge on which to plan for the future. To keep London ahead we need to understand its internal dynamics as much as its international competitive position.
Professor David Rhind, Convenor, London Higher Education Consortium and Vice Chancellor, City University, said: London’s 40 universities and colleges have unrivalled research capacity. We are pleased to harness their knowledge for the benefit of London and Londoners. This is a welcome opportunity to develop new networks for researchers. Londons education facilities have long been a draw for students from all over the world, with universities and research facilities that are internationally acknowledged. It is anticipated that if the Mayors strategies can meet the demand for improved public services, it will also help fill the capital’s long term unemployment. Such growth will also create a demand for a well educated and skilled staff, with the expected population growth (700,000 by 2016) putting an additional strain on the capitals already pressurized education resources.

Wembley clears final hurdle
Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London has welcomed the news that Wembley National Stadium Limited has signed a heads of agreement contract with a German bank that will secure the financing of the new national football stadium at Wembley. Securing the finance was the last remaining hurdle for the Wembley project to clear. This deal should put a stop to the medias endless recycling of old news about the management difficulties in the early days of the previous Wembley project. Football needs the new Wembley as much as the deprived area of North West London that the stadium will deliver an economic boost to. I am pleased to have been able to play my part in getting the project back on track by making sure that all the necessary transport arrangements were in place. This deal should finally put a stop to the negative media coverage surrounding the project. Just as all eyes focus on Japan and Korea, we can finally look forward to having superb new national stadium of our own, capable of hosting major events like the World Cup.

Theatre needs a quick flash!
Chichester Festival Theatre is desperate for a flash and quick!
The stage management team for the musical Up on the Roof, which is set in the 70s and opens in the Minerva Theatre next month, is trying to track down flashcubes for an instamatic camera, which is to be used on stage. Chief Electrician Chris Scott said:
The period camera we have is a Kodak Instamatic (model 56X) although I seem to remember the flashcubes seemed to fit all. We require a minimum of 20 complete cubes or equivalent (ie 80 flashes). The disposable flashcubes were pushed into a locating point on top of the camera and had 4 faces, with a flash bulb on each face. We are having great difficulty in finding these cubes and would be very grateful to anyone who has any suggestions that might help us in our search. Directed by Angus Jackson Up on the Roof is a bittersweet musical comedy. Choc a block with fabulous close-harmony a capella singing, the cast performs renditions of some of the most celebrated hits from 70s pop including songs by Gloria Gaynor; Three Degrees Frankie Valli and Johnny Mathis. Following five students from graduation night to their subsequent reunions five, and then ten years down the line, this is a funny and touching portrait of friends reunited.
Anyone who can help should telephone Vicky Edwards in the Theatres press office on 01243 784437.

BUSINESS NETWORKING EVENTS/RESEPTIONS PARTIES AND PROMOTIONS HAPPING EACH MONTH ON THE LONDON DIARY CALENDAR
The government's fiscal position is forecast to remain at least as tight as expected in last November's PBR. This is against the background of a healthy economic performance, with forecasts for growth, inflation and trade in line with our own UK Quarterly Economic Update. Budget details: The Chancellor announced a £4.5 billion package, including £1.7 billion-worth of measures for motorists set out in November's PBR. As widely leaked in advance, the 10 pence lower-level tax threshold is being widened, at an annual cost of £1 billion. The children's tax credit will be slightly more generous than announced in the PBR, and maternity/paternity benefits will be extended. Education and the health service will receive an extra £1 billion each in the next three years.
A number of measures were directed at companies. All the recommendations made by Paul Myners in his review of institutional investment will be implemented. Proposals for a new regime for providing tax relief on intellectual property and goodwill will be published, and there will be further consultation on tax relief for companies on the disposal of substantial shareholdings. The government will also consult on extending research and development tax credits to larger companies. The Treasury is forecasting current budget surpluses of £23 billion in 2000-01 and £17 billion in 2001-02, up from forecasts of £16.6 billion and £16 billion respectively in November's PBR. Surpluses in subsequent years are forecast to be at least as high as in the PBR.
A similar improvement is anticipated for public sector net borrowing in the current tax year, with a net repayment of £16.4 billion expected, compared with a forecast net repayment of £10 billion in the PBR. Net borrowing in later years is expected to be no higher than forecast in the PBR. The large net repayment in 2000-01, alongside the proceeds of the recent mobile phone licence auction, will allow the government to repay £34 billion of debt this year. As the Chancellor proudly announced, this is more debt repaid by one government in one year than by all governments together in the past 50 years.
Net debt is forecast to fall to 31.8% as a proportion of national income this financial year, down from 44% in 1997. It is forecast to fall to 30% by 2005-06. The Chancellor confirmed during his speech that the Bank of England's inflation target would remain at 2.5% until at least 2005-06. He doubtless hopes that his restraint will allow the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee room to cut interest rates further this year.
