Travelodge celebrates 25 years in the sleep indust - Added by admin
Starts: 7/19/2010
Ends: 7/25/2010

Travelodge celebrates 25 years in the sleep industry with Britain’s FIRST ever ‘Sleep Concert’

To celebrate 25 years in the sleep industry, pioneer’s of the UK budget hotel sector Travelodge, is hosting Britain’s fist ever ‘Sleep Concert’ - in an attempt to help some of the 22 million[i] sleep deprived British workers catch an additional forty winks during their working day.

The free-of-charge ‘Sleep Concert’, which aims to leave Britons snoring for more, will take place on Tuesday 20th July 2010 at 12.30pm at London City Road Travelodge. On arrival guests will be directed to the dimly lit concert hall where Travelodge has created the optimum environment to fall into a peaceful slumber.

With the sole aim of the ‘Sleep Concert’ being to help the audience nod off, each guest will have their own La-Z-boy; which is the ultimate reclining cushioned chair that emulates the experience of lying in bed. In addition guests will be given a

cushioned lavender eye mask which blocks out the light and gently fragrances the air to aid relaxation and sleep. (Pillows and duvets will also be available for guests)

Whilst lying back in comfort, guests will be treated to sleep inducing music by the UK’s award winning hottest String Quartet - String Mania. In preparation for the concert the Quartet has produced a repertoire of sleep inducing tunes which includes a compilation of works by; Mozart, Bach, alongside renditions of crooner Michael Buble, Coldplay and Snow Patrol’s chart-topping hits.

Leigh McCarron, Travelodge Sleep Director, said: “Travelodge has been a retailer of sleep since 1985 and to mark our 25th anniversary we thought it was quite fitting to host the UK’s first ‘Sleep Concert’ in response to Britain’s growing sleep deprivation problem.”

“The response to attend the concert has been amazing; we have a selection of different professions attending the concert which includes: builders, city workers, secretaries, medical workers, housewives, and dancers.”

“Sleep Concerts have been a great success in Japan, where sleep deprived workers will happily pay £50.00 for the privilege of nodding off to a live music performance; so that they can get some much needed shut eye. This idea has inspired us to create our own UK version of the concert, which will provide exhausted Britons the opportunity to relax, take a nap and feel revitalised; resulting in improved physical, mental and emotional health.”

Ewan Crawford, Sleep Expert at Edinburgh Sleep Centre, said: “The concept of a 'Sleep Concert' to help Britons catch up on their sleep is really interesting because it both capitalises on the power of music to induce sleep and offers the optimum environment for slumber. It's warm, dark and you don’t have any distractions such as your mobile phone. What's more, it removes any embarrassment of sleeping in public - you can totally relax and be safe in the knowledge that even snoring is socially acceptable."

Findings from Travelodge’s Sleep Index published in May 2010 revealed the UK is drained with a 29 billion ‘sleep debt’ due to the average Briton getting just six hours and twenty one minutes sleep per night - well below the recommended sleep quota of eight hours. The research highlighted that on average adults are getting 51 minutes less sleep than in 2008, when the national 'sleep debt' stood at 14 billion hours.

The current sleep shortfall is estimated to be costing employers around £1 billion per year, as £8 million sick days are taken as result of a bad nights sleep compared to 3.4 million sick days in 2008.

The top three causes of sleep deprivation are worries over job security (36 per cent) performance at work (27 per cent) and financial concerns (12 per cent).

EMPIRE MAIL: GEORGE V & THE GPO

Presented by LONDON 2010: FESTIVAL OF STAMPS

GUILDHALL ART GALLERY, LONDON until 25 July 2010

Exhibition commemorates centenary of King George V, the ‘Philatelist King’s’, accession to the throne

Flagship event of the London 2010: Festival of Stamps from The British Postal Museum & Archive (BPMA) / http://www.london2010.org.uk

Displays include some of the rarest and most valuable stamps in the world

A major exhibition by The British Postal Museum & Archive (BPMA) and the Royal Philatelic Collection, Empire Mail: George V & The GPO is the flagship event of the London 2010: Festival of Stamps and is currently open at the Guildhall Art Gallery until 25 July 2010. The exhibition features many items from these unique collections and explores the life of King George V through his personal passions as a stamp collector.

George V became known as the ‘Philatelist King’ and this exhibition celebrates the centenary of his accession to the throne and the extraordinary period of design and innovation in the General Post Office during his reign.

George V’s reign from 1910 to 1936 was an era of conflict and great change and saw the development of a number of communication methods which brought the world closer together. Developments during the King’s reign included innovations in mail transportation, the first Atlantic air crossing and the rise of graphic design in the 1920s and 1930s. Posters, war time memorabilia, vehicles, pillar boxes, philatelic rarities and remarkable footage from the GPO Film Unit will be on display.

Film highlights include two pieces of footage, each captured at opposite ends of the King’s reign, showing some of the developments in mail transportation that brought the world closer together. Pictures of an airborne plane carrying the first ever Airmail from London to Windsor in 1911 will be playing alongside footage of the first regular Airmail flight to Australia from 1934.

All items on display are sourced from the treasures of the BPMA and the Royal Philatelic Collection including exquisite stamps and stamp artwork. One of the star exhibits is a unique example of the 2d Tyrian Plum, significant because it is the only known used stamp of its kind. As 100,000 sheets of this new stamp were about to be issued, an example was posted to George V, then Prince of Wales, on 5 May 1910. By the time it had arrived, his father King Edward VII had died and Prince George had become King. On King Edward’s death it was decided that the 2d Tyrian Plum should be withdrawn and the entire printing destroyed.

Further star exhibits include the Post Office Mauritius stamps which are among the rarest and most valuable in the world; the largest block of Penny Blacks (10) used on the first day they were valid (6 May 1840) and Kenya and Uganda £100 stamps which were used for fiscal purposes.

Visitors will also be able to uncover fascinating philatelic stories. For example, it is not widely known that Lawrence of Arabia created a stamp or that RMS Titanic, perhaps the most famous ship in history, was a mail ship.

This exhibition is just one of a number of events happening across the capital and beyond as part of the London 2010: Festival of Stamps. The Festival is a year long programme of exhibitions, events and activities marking the centenary of George V’s, the Philatelist King’s, accession to the throne. Key events include: London 2010 International Stamp Exhibition at The Business Design Centre; Post Abolition: Commemorative Stamps From Around the World at the Museum of London Docklands; The British Library Philatelic Rarities; Impressions of Africa at the British Museum and other exhibitions with partners including: the Women’s Library, Marylebone Cricket Club Museum – Lord’s, Twickenham World Rugby Museum and Bletchley Park.

Roger McGough to chair international competition

Old Possum’s Children’s Poetry Competition 2010

Roger McGough is to chair the judging panel for a worldwide poetry competition for 7-11 year olds. The Competition is organised by the Children’s Poetry Bookshelf, a poetry book club for young people run by the Poetry Book Society. To link with National Poetry Day on Thursday 7 October, children will be asked to write a poem in English on the theme of ‘Home’.

Now in its fifth year, the competition is open to both individuals and schools. Cash prizes of £250 for first prize, £100 for second and £50 for third will be awarded, along with books and CPB memberships, in two age groups, 7-8 year-olds and 9-11 year-olds. Entries will be accepted from Friday 10 September, up until the closing date of Friday 15 October. The winners will be announced at a gala celebration in London in December.

The British Council partnership, now in its third year, will continue to encourage entries to the ‘International Learner category’ for children based outside the UK who are learning English as a foreign or second language.

The Old Possum’s Children’s Poetry Competition will encourage children to write poems of their own and help teachers to bring poetry alive in the classroom. A teacher’s guide to accompany the competition will be available to download from the Children’s Poetry Bookshelf website (www.childrenspoetrybookshelf.co.uk) from early September, along with further information about the competition.

Described by Carol Ann Duffy as ‘the patron saint of poetry’, chair of the judges Roger McGough is one of the UK’s best-loved poets with over 50 collections of poetry for both adults and children to his name. The anthology The Mersey Sound, first published in 1967, showcased McGough’s poems alongside those of Adrian Henri and Brian Patten and has since become one of the bestselling poetry anthologies of all time. Roger McGough was awarded the CBE for services to poetry in 2005 and continues to be a very active performance poet. With his poetry used widely in schools, children will be familiar with the wry humour and liveliness of his work. He has twice won the CLPE (previously the Signal) Award for the best children’s poetry book and his most recent children’s collection is Slapstick.

Roger McGough is joined by a distinguished panel who are passionate about children’s poetry: the poet/guitarist James Carter, who travels widely giving poetry performances and workshops; Julia Eccleshare, writer, broadcaster, lecturer, Co-Director of the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education and the Guardian’s Children’s Books Editor; David Fickling, distinguished publisher of David Fickling Books, a Random House imprint for children’s books; and Caroline Horn, Children’s News Editor of The Bookseller and founder of the Reading Zone children’s books website.

The Old Possum’s Children’s Poetry Competition is generously supported by Old Possum’s Practical Trust.

Vets In Hong Kong presents:

Vets In Hong Kong www.myspace.com/vetsinhongkong

We've got a great band called Gallops headlining coming over from Wales before heading off to play the Big Chill in August. The four-piece band create cerebral, experimental and heavy pieces of music channeling a wide range of musical styles and influences into a sound that has been called 'cyborg soul music' - Gallops themselves describe their music as Black Sabbath being sexually assaulted by Pacman and Steve Reich. Gallops have recorded three live sessions for Radio One, and played at the Radio One Big Weekend and Wakestock festivals. Their track 'Lasers', appeared on the compilation 'Music Sounds Better With Huw' compiled by Radio One's Huw Stephens.

Vets In Hong Kong (guitarist/singer Matt Grindon, bass player Nick Butler and drummer Matthew Reay) met at University and started playing as a band in 2006. They create music which has been described as 'alternatively intense and ethereal', with restless vocal melodies underpinned with off-kilter rhythms and hammering guitars. They put out their own band zines and are soon to play on Tom Robinson's BBC Introducing show. Vets In Hong are currently recording their music on a farm in Essex. As you do.

Japanese punk-jazz renegades SOIL & ”PIMP” SESSIONS burst into 2010 with their sixth studio album on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings imprint. The sextet’s roof-raising, festival-conquering live show (dubbed “Death Jazz” in a two-finger salute to Japan’s polite, noodling, straight ahead jazz cognoscenti) has earned them new fans at every stop on their annual trailblazing European tours.

In response to their previous LP ‘Planet Pimp’, Time Out hailed the group for “…thrashing and trashing jazz into a new century…” They are committed to the same spirit of invention as Coltrane, Shepp, Mingus, Ayler, Sun Ra and Ornette, although these quintessential avant garde jazz-men barely scrape the surface of the Pimps’ musical reference points. Pivotal to that essential Death Jazz mix are Cynic (one LP in ‘93…. these dudes are LARGE), Peter Brötzmann (free jazz German saxophonist/clarinetist – check ‘Machine Gun’), Lou Reed’s ‘Metal Machine Music’, NYC’s John Zorn and Original Silence – a kind of death-jazz supergroup, featuring the ubiquitous Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, alongside members of the Thing, Zu and Dutch experimental rockers the Ex. It’s all pretty wild stuff and it’s just a starting point.

The cunningly titled ‘6’ is – yep, you guessed it - the sixth album by the sextet and alongside monstrous good time grooves like ‘Pop Korn’ and ‘Papa’s Got A Brand New Pigbag’, the band incorporate two vocal-featured tracks for the first time. ‘MY FOOLISH HEART crazy on earth’ features acclaimed Japanese alternative female singer Ringo Sheena on vocals whilst a cover of the club classic ‘Stolen Moments’ features top UK jazzer Jamie Cullum who collaborated with the band for the BBC Electric Proms in 2008. Taking things into the electronic arena, renowned Japanese turntablist, DJ KENTARO, winner of the Technics DMC World DJ final in 2002, contributes the opening sound collage.

‘6’ finds SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS in blazing hot form. The album highlights the band’s consistent progress in their mission to seek new sounds and push the envelope. Purists, anoraks and haters beware, the “PIMP”s are back and they ain’t leaving ‘til you show them the respect that they deserve.

LONDON REVIVAL OF1950s CLASSIC MUSICAL BELLS ARE RINGING

TO OPEN AT THE UNION THEATRE

Directed by Paul Foster

Book and Lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green

Music by Jule Styne

Starring Anna-Jane Casey

A brand new production of the Broadway musical Bells Are Ringing will open at the Union Theatre on 29 September 2010. Directed by Paul Foster and produced by Jonathan Russell Productions, this warm and witty musical tells the story of Ella Peterson who works at Susanswerphone, her cousin’s answering service for the celebrities on New York’s smart East Side. With plenty of opportunities to indulge her gift for “helping” others, events begin to spiral out of control as Ella falls for hard-drinking playwright Jeff Moss and her little white lies come back to haunt her.

With an evergreen score by Jule Styne (Gypsy, Funny Girl) and Book by Betty Comden and Adolph Green (Singin’ in the Rain, On the Town), this charming musical features the enduring standards “Just in Time”, “The Party’s Over” and “Long Before I Knew You”. Anna-Jane Casey (Chicago, Piaf, Sunday in the Park with George, TMA winner for Best Actress in a Musical for Mack and Mabel) and Gary Milner (Parade, Evita, A Streetcar Named Desire) will lead a cast of 15 in the first major revival since 1957 of this vintage musical comedy.

Established in 1998 by Sasha Regan, the Union Theatre is an intimate fringe theatre in Southwark, London. The converted disused paper warehouse is set beneath railway arches making it one of London’s more unique theatrical spaces.

95.8 CAPITAL FM’S GREG BURNS SAYS “BE ‘QUIDS IN’ THIS SUMMER AND HELP A LONDON CHILD WITH GOURMET BURGER KITCHEN

Gourmet Burger Kitchen (gbk), Help a London Child and 95.8 Capital FM have teamed up once again to re-launch their iconic fundraising campaign ‘Quids In’ that is guaranteed to get your mouth watering this summer.

If you’ve dedicated all your summer savings to a getaway holiday, then why not have a meal on gbk. From 19th July, simply log on to www.capitalfm.com/gbk, download a voucher and take it to your nearest gbk restaurant, buy one burger or main course salad and get a second for just £1! GBK will then donate that £1 to 95.8 Capital FM’s Help a London Child, who offers financial support to grass-root projects for London’s less advantaged children. If that’s not exciting enough, when you download your voucher you’ll be entered into the draw to win an amazing camper van dream trip for two to New Zealand with £1000 spending money, courtesy of Air New Zealand, Tourism New Zealand, Pacific Horizon and Steinlager Pure. Just visit www.capitalfm.com/gbk and register your details!

GBK’s sizzling summer menu will satisfy all your cravings with a diverse range of delicious burgers and salads. For those seeking a more exotic bite why not try the Jamaican burger - a 100% Aberdeen Angus burger topped with tangy yet sweet mango and ginger sauce, salad and mayonnaise; whilst the adventurous diner should be sure to attempt the Mexican with lashings of sour cream, avocado, spicy kidney bean salsa, mayonnaise & salad. Whatever the dish, gbk burgers and salads are a treat to get you in the mood for summer, and with the Help a London Child promotion running from 19th July until the end of August, there is plenty of time to munch your way through the menu, and do your bit to help those in need.

Last year’s ‘Quids In’ campaign raised over £80,000 which allowed Help a London Child to provide financial support to at least 40 grass roots projects working with disadvantaged children in the capital city. With the re-launch of the voucher this summer, gbk hopes to raise at least the same again so Help a London Child can reach out to even more young people giving them the opportunity to enjoy the childhood that everyone deserves.

Help a London Child supporter and Capital Drivetime presenter, Greg Burns, said: “It’s fantastic that gbk are giving Londoners the chance to be ‘Quids In’ again this summer. What an amazing incentive to get involved – not just a meal for £1 but also the chance to win a trip to New Zealand! Plus you’ll be helping us raise much needed cash to make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged children right here in our capital city.”

TOM’S KITCHEN AT SOMERSET HOUSE - Added by admin

TOM’S KITCHEN AT SOMERSET HOUSE
-Michelin-starred Chef extends offer at leading London venue-

Celebrated chef Tom Aikens is set to build on the success of the recently launched Tom’s Terrace and Tom’s Deli with “Tom’s Kitchen at Somerset House”, which will open at the end of this month.

In an exciting transformation of the previous Admiralty Restaurant, Tom’s Kitchen at Somerset House will mirror the concept of Tom’s Kitchen Chelsea. The menu will offer the freshest British produce including Daylesford 7 hour Confit Lamb with Balsamic Onions and Mash, Grilled Marinated Cobb Chicken, Sea Bass Meunière with Black Olives and Tomatoes, and the truly indulgent Truffle Chips with Parmesan. Desserts include the decadent Chocolate Hot Pot with Pistachio Ice-Cream and Baked Alaska. Or opt for The Tom’s Kitchen Cheese Board served with Quince Paste and Biscuits, also a firm favourite.

The restaurant will also serve breakfast and, on the weekend, the best brunch on the river Thames. Full English, American Style Crisp Vanilla Belgian Waffles with Caramelized Apples, Cinnamon Cream and Maple Syrup savoured with either a Bucks Fizz or a Bloody Mary are the perfect start to any day.

The opening of Tom’s Kitchen at Somerset House compliments the al-fresco style menu of Tom’s Terrace. Also created by Tom Aikens, it offers diners the opportunity to enjoy the Tom’s Kitchen Tasting Board (which includes Coronation Crab Salad, Mini Burgers and Tartine of Red Onion and Aubergine Compote), Grilled Paillard of Chicken Salad, and a delectable range of desserts, all served with a stunning vista of the capital.

Commenting on the forthcoming opening of Tom’s Kitchen at Somerset House Tom said, “Extending the Tom’s Kitchen portfolio is a keen ambition for me and with such positive feedback from existing customers at Tom’s Kitchen Chelsea and Tom’s Terrace, launching Tom’s Kitchen at Somerset House is the natural next step. Somerset House is a fantastic venue and I am looking forward to continuing to serve guests over the Summer and beyond with first-class dishes made with the finest ingredients.”

“I Wont Go Home Til Morning is dedicated to the memory of my mother, Jane Addams Allen Guthrie (1935-2004) My mother never performed professionally, but she had a lovely natural style of singing and playing guitar. She grew up in Chicago, and as a teenager she spent her summers volunteering at Quaker work camps run by the American Friends Service Committee in Kentucky and other parts of Appalachia. I believe that’s where she first became acquainted with the music of Jean Ritchie,

Peggy Seeger and other folk singers and song collectors.

My mother died in January of 2004, and it’s only since then that I’ve developed the urge to revisit the songs she and I used to sing together when I was a child. When I discovered traditional Irish music at the age of eighteen, it had such a powerful impact on me that for many years I had no interest in singing or playing anything else.

My first album, When Two Lovers Meet, consisted entirely of traditional Irish material, bar one song that I wrote myself.

I still love Irish music, but in recent years I’ve been turning more and more to the Southern Appalachian songs and tunes that I grew up with. I can’t help feeling that this is part of a cathartic process that has to do with my mother’s death, the births of my son the year before she died and my daughter the year after, and the fact that I’m now living, with my husband and children, in what was once my mother’s house.

All the songs on this recording have powerful emotional resonances for me, and all are connected one way or another to my mother, so it’s appropriate that I dedicate this album to her. I miss her more than I could ever express in words, and it will always be a source of great sorrow and regret to me that she and her grandchildren never had the opportunity to get to know one another”. Travelling in the heat - is your hotel room air co - Added by admin

Travelling in the heat - is your hotel room air conditioned?

• Madrid: "coolest hotel metropolis in Europe"
• Stockholm makes guests break a sweat

London, 22 July 2010 - Whether in trains, busses or cars - many travellers are having a tough time with the hot summer temperatures. Travelling in this unbearable heat can be a real problem.

So arriving at a hotel with an air conditioned room can be something to really look forward to. But in Europe you shouldn't get your hopes up too soon that you will find your own personal air conditioner in your room. A new study by hotel.info, the leading online hotel reservation service for more than 210,000 hotels worldwide, shows there is a major discrepancy in the "air conditioner density" of hotels in the major European cities investigated. Many hotels still offer their guests a "warm welcome"; only this time the hotel room is where it's especially warm.

Most air conditioned hotels in Madrid

Of the major European cities investigated in the study, the Spanish capital Madrid is the destination where the most hotel operators offer their guests comfortable hotel room temperatures (72.7%). Nearly three quarters of rooms are available with air conditioning in Madrid. Athens (69.1%), Budapest (66.7%) and Rome (66.6%) follow. Paris (38.6%) and Prague (37.9%) had an above average "air conditioner density" for their hotel rooms. Moscow, Warsaw and London had comparatively poor results, pampering only around every fourth guest with a comfortable room temperature. And Stockholm came in dead last with only 13.3% of rooms being air conditioned. Most hotel guests have to sweat it out during heat waves, which, admittedly, are not that common in Sweden.

Julian Schnabel Polaroids: Beyond Infinity and Grandview

To be Exhibited in the UK for the First Time

Bernheimer Fine Art Photography is proud to present an exhibition of large-scale Polaroids by the American artist and film director Julian Schnabel which will be on show at Colnaghi, celebrating its 250th anniversary this year, at 15 Old Bond Street, London W1, from 6 October to 12 November 2010. The exhibition will coincide with Frieze Art Fair, which will be held in London from 14 to 17 October.

Curated by Petra Giloy-Hirtz, the exhibition will present a selection of photographs, mostly previously unpublished, which offer an insight into the enigmatic character of the artist and a glimpse into his working environment. Works on view include images of Schnabel’s family and friends, such as Lou Reed, Placido Domingo and Mickey Rourke, alongside Polaroids of the artist's private spaces within the Palazzo Chupi on New York's Lower West Side and the interiors and surroundings of his studios in Brooklyn, Montauk and Manhattan. Schnabel took these extraordinary large-format Polaroids, both in brilliant colour and black-and-white, using a dolly-mounted 20 x 24 in. 1970s camera, and in some cases the artist has painted on the surfaces of the photographs. Together these Polaroids create a unique tableau, both intensely personal and poetic.

Born in New York City (1951), Schnabel received acclaim for his Plate Paintings in the early 1980s and has created an influential body of work in the intervening years, including paintings, sculptures and photographs. He has also directed films since the mid 1990s: Basquiat (1996), Before Night Falls (2000) and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007, Oscar for Best Director). His fourth film Miral premiers in September 2010.

Exhibitions of Schnabel’s work have been held in some of the world’s leading museums and the artist is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Guggenheim Museums, New York and Bilbao; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and Tate, London.

Bernheimer Fine Art Photography, which is the exclusive representative of Schnabel’s photographical work in Europe, is run by Blanca Bernheimer, daughter of the distinguished German Old Master paintings dealer, Konrad O. Bernheimer. In 2002, Bernheimer acquired Colnaghi and joined forces with the pre-eminent Old Master drawings dealer Katrin Bellinger. Colnaghi’s interests in photography began in the 1850s when they became the commercial distributors of Roger Fenton’s photographs of objects in the collection of the British Museum and when they published, jointly with Thomas Agnew, Fenton’s historic photographs of the war in the Crimea. Colnaghi continued to publish photographically illustrated books on the fine arts and to offer prints by well-known artists, the most distinguished being Julia Margaret Cameron. It is appropriate that this exhibition of Julian Schnabel’s Polaroids should make its UK debut at Colnaghi, the oldest commercial art gallery in the world.

JULIAN SCHNABEL POLAROIDS by Petra Giloy-Hirtz will be published in the UK by Prestel on 30 August 2010. Petra Giloy-Hirtz is a Munich-based author and editor whose most recent books include Lucas Reiner: Los Angeles Trees and Christopher Thomas: New York Sleeps (both by Prestel).

EDIBLE WOMAN

release new album ‘Everywhere At Once’

- album out 26 July on Sleeping Star Records -

www.myspace.com/ediblewoman

Coming on like a bunch of raging No Wave bulls in a funky china shop, these druids is possessed, kiddies: possessed by the kind of epiphanic melodies that have you singing along after just half a listen; possessed of a kind of dynamic rhythmical urgency so wonderfully exhausting everything after sounds pure wuss… (Julian Cope, march 2010)

Mixing the schizophrenic versatility of the band with a new-found attention to sonic details and pop rules, new album “Everywhere At Once” runs the gamut from hard electronic grooves to wild psychedelic rides, without forgetting the apocalyptic hardcore punk of their origins. Recorded and mixed by Mattia Coletti (Sedia, Polvere, From Hands) and Lorenzo Stecconi (Lento, Farwest Zombee) the album is another step in the continuous redifinition and reinventon of Edible Woman identity.

Furious synth attacks mixed to sweet, moving melodies and sudden psychedelic blasts…While reminding us artists as different as Oneida, Lightning Bolt and Jesus Lizard, what makes this album really special is its sense of complete artistic freedom. 8/10 (Rumore Magazine).

Nasty, acid punk rock full of unexpected twists and turns… Surely one of the best Italian bands around: 7.5 /10 (Blow Up Magazine).

Bizarrely poised between monolithic post-hardcore textures and psychedelic swirls, “Everywhere at once” matches hypnotic stoner grooves to an almost Doors-like keyboard sound ...Powerful!
8.5 /10 (S&V)

Taking their name from a Margaret Atwood novel, Edible Woman started in 2001 as a super-noisy instrumental trio composed by original band members Andrea Giommi (bass), Nicola Romani (drums) and Giacomo Governatori (guitar).

After the addition of singer Luca Giommi, the band launched itself in a long series of concerts and finally took some time in 2004 to release its first album “Spare Me / CALF” (Psychotica Records).

Now fusing a monolithic approach to math rock with flashes of crystal-clear melodies and sounding like a weird mix of Jesus Lizard and Neil Young, Edible Woman was ready to hit the Italian and European stages once again (sharing the stage, among others, with bands like Karate, El Guapo and The Thermals).

After a long string of concerts, Giacomo Governatori left in 2005 and remaining band members chose to record their sophomore effort as a quartet introducing keyboardist Federico Antonioni in place of a guitarist.

Released in 2007 again for Psychotica records, “The Scum Album” squeezed the best out of the bass/ organ/ drums line-up, updating the old Screamers urgency lesson with an ear for harmony and weird time signatures. Showing a bizarre amalgamation of hardcore punk, abrasive synth sounds and an almost pop approach to songwriting, the album gained the band excellent reviews and cemented their status as major exponents of the Italian noise scene, alongside other groups like ZU and Lento.

On tour again and after more supporting slots for bands as different as J Mascis’ Witch and Jennifer Gentle, in early 2009 Edible Woman members were back in studio to record their most ambitious project to date.

Nino Rota - Added by admin
Starts: 7/22/2010

Nino Rota

Nino Rota is considered one of the greatest composers of all time. From composing the music for The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974) to the scores for The Taming of the Shrew (1967) and La Dolce Vita (1960), BFI Southbank presents a selection of his films throughout the month of September as well as a Nationwide Release of the newly restored film The Leopard Il Gattopardo (1963).

Nino Rota was one of the most successful of all film composers: prolific, esteemed and honoured. Best known internationally for his work with Federico Fellini, Francis Ford Coppola, Luchino Visconti and Franco Zeffirelli, he scored around 160 films, in France, Britain, the USA and USSR, as well as melodramas, comedies and genre films at the heart of popular Italian cinema. Steeped in classical music (he was Director of the Bari Conservatory of Music for most of his life), he drew also on a vast range of popular, traditional, jazz and folk styles for his scores. Producers sought him because he was quick and reliable. Directors wanted him because he had an ability to adapt himself to their sensibilities: brilliant and elusive for Fellini in films such as 8½ Otto e mezzo (1963), serious and intellectual for films like Visconti’s White Nights Le notti bianche (1957), witty and sentimental/nostalgic for Renato Castellani in È primavera Spring Is Here (1949) and so on.

His music is touching, catchy and affecting, and yet it is also restrained, uncommitted, every emotion always tinged with another. He is able – and supremely with Fellini and Coppola – to convey a dizzying complexity of feeling and point-of-view with nonchalance, charm and no fuss. His music is full of affection and tenderness towards the world of the film, bringing us close, very close; and yet it remains ironic, rueful, creating a very particular place from which to watch and listen.

2010 Oldie Literary Lunches

Sponsored by Noble Caledonia

Tuesday July 27th at Simpson¹s-in-the-Strand

Douglas Hurd on Choose Your Weapons: A History of the Foreign Secretary

Previously booked for the April literary lunch, Lord Hurd has recovered from
his illness and has kindly agreed to speak at this lunch. Hurd was Foreign
Secretary to Margaret Thatcher, private secretary to Edward Heath and an MP
between 1974 and 1997. Drawing in his experiences, Choose Your Weapons is a
history of British political life and foreign policy when Britain was at the
peak of Empire. As well as his memoirs, Hurd has also written a highly
acclaimed biography of Robert Peel.

Heather Brooke on The Silent State

Heather Brooke is an award-winning writer, journalist and activist. Her
unprecedented five-year campaign for the full disclosure of MPs¹ expenses
led to a full-scale reform of the Parliamentary expense system.
Her new book, The Silent State reveals that the recent MPs¹ expenses scandal
is merely the tip of the iceberg. Brooke exposes the shocking and often
farcical lack of transparency at all levels of government and argues that
without proper access to the information that citizens pay for, Britain can
never be a true democracy. Her previous book was Your Right to Know, a
popular guide to the Freedom of Information Act.

Brian Moore on Beware of the Dog

Brian Moore, once known as OPitbull¹, is a former England rubgy player. He
played in three Rugby World Cups and won the Grand Slam in 1991, 1992 and
1995. He has worked as a manicurist and a solicitor, and now has columns in
the Sun and Telegraph and commentates on international rugby matches. When
his memoir was published in January, he revealed how he was abused by a

'DRAGON QUEST' CRAZE THAT TOOK JAPAN
BY STORM SET TO SWEEP THE UK

~ Dragon Quest IX launches on Nintendo DS ~

~ Diversity to perform at official UK launch, Friday lunchtime ~

The phenomenon which has gripped a whole nation in Japan is heading for the UK with a major launch this week.

Queues a mile long formed for the launch of Dragon Quest IX in Tokyo with sales of 2.4 million in the first weekend – a world record launch in a single country.

And huge crowds are expected at the official UK launch of the game, in association with GAME, this Friday when Britain’s Got Talent winners Diversity will perform at the launch in the Westfield Shopping Centre, London. Already the game is attracting outstanding reviews from the UK press.

Such is the impact of Dragon Quest in its native Japan, the latest launch was even held on a Saturday morning, when games previously always launched on a Wednesday, in order to stop mass truancy by children and adults missing work in the race to get their hands on this immersive role-playing game.

In one district of Tokyo the local authorities have roped off special zones for Dragon Quest players so they don't wander off the pavements or collide with other pedestrians while immersed in the handheld game on their Nintendo DS.

The nine games in the Dragon Quest series have sold a total of 53 million games in Japan alone, beaten only by gaming icons Mario and Pokemon for sales. And in Tokyo there is even a restaurant devoted to Dragon Quest where diners eat off screens showing the game. The first eight games were aimed almost exclusively at a domestic audience, but with Dragon Quest IX it has been aimed at a more global audience.

James Honeywell from Nintendo UK said: "Britain is one of the biggest gaming markets in the world and after the phenomenal success of this franchise in Japan, it looks like the Dragon Quest craze is really set to take off over here."

“Reviewers in the UK have already given Dragon Quest IX some of the highest ratings we've ever seen for such a game, reflecting the focus this time on getting European gamers into this Japanese phenomenon.”

Neil Ashurst Head of UK PR at GAME added: “We’re delighted to be hosting the UK launch of Dragon Quest IX and with Diversity performing as well, we’re sure that there will be crowds of our customers and shoppers at Westfield wanting to try out this great game.”

Already the Guardian has described Dragon Quest IX as "A massive and rewarding undertaking that will keep your DS busy for much of the summer" while The Independent called it "a handheld marvel".

Dragon Quest IX: 'Sentinels of the Starry Skies' allows players to put themselves in the role of the game's hero or heroine, a guardian angel fallen to Earth who must embark on an epic adventure in the mortal world where they must protect the mortals, battle many foes and ultimately complete a Quest which will return them to the Kingdom of Angels.

Diversity will be performing at the launch event at Westfield Shopping Centre at 1pm on Friday July 23rd. The launch is being staged in association with GAME, Westfield.

The Brute Chorus announce album Launch Party
Released on east London indie TAPE. The album is due to drop on the 13th September, with the album launch party to be held at Londons Luminaire on the 8th of September.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Brute Chorus are to release their second album How The Caged Bird Sings on the 13th September a mere 11 months after the release of their eponymous, live debut.

How The Caged Bird Sings is eleven songs linked by the theme of yearning, be it lust, desire or need; from the opening spaghetti dub of Lazarus, a retelling of the bible story as a parable to revive a failing relationship, through the Doorsian doo-wop of Whipping Boy which lends the album its title, up to the sardonic pop of album closer Heaven these songs find the band hiding less and less behind characters from mythology and fairy tales to stand up and bare their souls.

The album also features three songs recorded live in the hall. Banged & Blown and Lyre Bird, Humming Bird are taken from a set of drunk hymns written by lead singer James Steel and taught to the band minutes before recording after a night in the pub. The instrumentation is improvised and they have a real field recording quality to them.

After The Tone - A New Musical

Not a revival. Not previously a film. Not born in the USA.

The Bridewell Theatre

2nd - 14th August 2010

7.30pm Mon-Sat (2.30pm Weds & Sat)

Tickets: £13.50

PRESS NIGHT: TUESDAY 3RD AUGUST

With music and lyrics by an eighteen-year-old, After the Tone is the most exciting and

promising new British musical to hit the London theatre scene in decades. Two years ago,

young composer Oliver Fenwick teamed up with writer Russell Thompson and this is the

result of their collaboration: a witty and sharp piece of musical theatre.

Put four people on a stage. Four people who all live their lives in the shadow of the elusive

Livi, a beautiful and ruthless city worker who seems to have it all. She is popular and

admired, and life as she knows it is about to take an unexpected - and uninvited - turn. A

dark and funny lesson in how not to treat people, this intimate piece of musical theatre will

make you laugh - until you cry. You think you know your friends? Time to think again.

Russell Thompson, the showʼs co-writer, says: “This is the first chance weʼve had for our

work to be seen. London is difficult and itʼs full of American shows. We want to prove that

there is real quality in what young writers in the UK are producing. Itʼs time to get brand

new British musicals back in the West End.”

GreenMoney
On their Myspace page, GreenMoney labelled themselves as 'a pair of jokers from West London making beats in an NW10 rave shed.' Well, we're all laughing now as Alex Phountzi, formerly of Bugz In The Attic, and Leo Greenslade, of legendary Notting Hill Arts Club night yOyO, have been working together since 2008, combining their talents to remix artists such as Chart Topper, Yo Majesty, Jamaica's Terry Lynn and Busy Signal, Detroit's Amp Fiddler and Kanye West album vocalist Kid Cudi.
Greenmoney join the dots between bashment house, hip hop, UK funky, grime and dubstep. Their track, 'Skydiving', with London rapper Twizzle is getting heavy rotation as well as recent remixes for Crookers, Gramophonedzie, Cubic Zirconia and Busy Signal... 'Gold Ru$h' (Fools Gold) is their first solo release, featuring the cream of UK bashment MCs.

CULTURES COLLIDE AS EAST MEETS WEST IN GROUNDBREAK - Added by admin
Starts: 7/22/2010
Ends: 9/26/2010

CULTURES COLLIDE AS EAST MEETS WEST IN GROUNDBREAKING INTERNATIONAL
PERFORMANCE

In a unique theatrical collaboration, Border Crossings joins forces with
Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre and artists from China, France, India, and
Sweden. Created by an international company with no single common language,
Re-Orientations has been developed over two years in London and Shanghai,
and opens at Soho Theatre before touring to China and Sweden.

For the first time, leading Chinese theatre-makers are collaborating with
their counterparts in the West and India to address their changing society
and its relationship to a globalised world. The play takes a frank look at
China's single-child policy, at the decline of traditional Asian cultures,
and at previously taboo subjects like homosexuality.

Set in the aftermath of a young woman's suicide, the play brings together
apparently disconnected lives. A Chinese baby is abandoned by the roadside.
Two Swedish actors play out sexual dramas, both onstage and off. A mother
battles with tsunami relief in India until an unexpected phone call shatters
her world and all the characters' lives collide across continents.

Performed in English, Mandarin, Swedish and Kannada, but fully
comprehensible to a London audience, Re-Orientations draws from a broad
range of performance traditions; from Swedish naturalism to the all-female
Shanghai yue opera and the all-male Indian form Yakshagana. Stunning imagery
collides with a powerful physical style and vivid storytelling in this
multi-cultural and multi-media explosion of East-meets-West.

Border Crossings' Patron Peter Sellars says: "This project embodies a hope
for a mutually imagined future for all our changing worlds".

Artistic Director Michael Walling says: "Re-Orientations is a fast-paced
adventure that challenges cultural perceptions at every turn. It is
exhilarating to experience such a mix of traditional and contemporary
theatrical forms being used to bring together the personal stories of our
own time".

Re-Orientations is the third in a series of devised plays which are linked
thematically, but which stand alone as inspiring pieces of intercultural
theatre. Orientations played at Oval House in 2003/4 ('Rich... versatile...
as many-limbed as a Hindu god' Time Out) followed by Dis-Orientations at
Riverside Studios in 2006 ('gloriously chaotic... brilliantly executed... a
culture shock worth experiencing' Time Out).

Starts: 7/22/2010

MICHAEL HOPPEN GALLERY

SHOMEI TOMATSU & DAIDO MORIYAMA

9 SEPTEMBER – 9 OCTOBER 2010

PREVIEW: 9 SEPTEMBER, 7-9PM

The work of Daido Moryiama and Shomei Tomatsu, the two giants of the Japanese post-war movement presented side by side for the first time in the UK, will be unveiled at the Michael Hoppen Gallery on 9 September. While their photographs differ in style, sentiment is common to both. They address love, anguish and anger with equal power, passion and subtlety.

Despite being relatively unknown outside his home country, seventy-seven year old Shomei Tomatsu is widely considered the most important figure in Japanese post-war photography. Combining a unique visual style with personal insight, his work spans a period of more than 50 years, examining the island nation since World War II with quiet brilliance and an uncompromising look on a complex, nuanced subject. His major American retrospective in 2006, Skin of a Nation, was hailed as one of the most important shows of Japanese photography to have been staged in the United States of America.

Cinematic in scope and presentation, Tomatsu’s first UK exhibition will provide a candid look at the effects of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, the impact of the Japanese post-1960s economic boom and the continuing influence of American military and popular culture in Okinawa. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity as Tomatsu’s work is rarely available or exhibited, though his artistic longevity as a photographer and the esteem of his peers is a tribute to his vast talent.

Complicated and disconcerting, Daido Moriyama’s raw and visceral work reflects the disruption wreaked by the American World War II occupation and the profound social shifts accelerated by industrialization and urbanization. Examining the collision of a traditionally insular culture and freewheeling capitalism, Moriyama’s images are timeless portrayals of the unsettling limbo thrown up by the clash between the old and the new.

In his early work, Moriyama used grainy textures and chiaroscuro, suggesting an insidious, edgy feeling of isolation with dark, mysterious backgrounds pierced by harsh spotlighting. However since the 1980's, his vision has become lighter, fresher and larger. This new clarity - perhaps reflecting the security of a maturing artist - nonetheless retains the perceptive intellect and compositional power evident throughout his career.

Taking a retrospective look at his oeuvre, the exhibition features vintage works from these earlier periods as well as photographs taken during Moriyama’s multiple visits to Hawaii in 2007 and 2008. Exhibited in 2009 at the Metropolitan Museum of Photography in Tokyo, these large prints are unique editions of one. A group of these prints will form part of the exhibition, giving collectors and scholars an opportunity to compare and confront the two masters of Japan’s fascinating and complex post-World War II regeneration.

Dreadzone Biography

The Dreadzone story began back in 1980’s in West London with the fall out that came after the legendary Clash split. Mick Jones recruited Greg Dread and Leo Williams as the rhythm section of his new band, Big Audio Dynamite and when B.A.D went their separate ways, Greg and Leo formed Dreadzone and never looked back.

Alan McGee‘s Creation Records released Dreadzone’s first, groundbreaking album 360. Their seminal 1995 album Second Light recived massive support from John Peel, who included the album in his top ten favourite albums of all time. The top 20 hit from that album Little Britain has since gone on to acquire cult status.

15 years, 6 albums, hundreds of festival performances and thousands of gigs later, Dreadzone are basking in the glory of critical acclaim. Their recently released album Eye On The Horizon received extensive positive coverage around the world, with Rock N Reel magazine declaring it “a minor modern masterpiece”, and The Sun declaring that the band’s fire brand mix of dace energised dub still has power. The Dread sound is now, more than ever, a part of the musical landscape of this country.

Dreadzone are Greg Dread, original bassmaster Leo Williams, the unmistakable MC Spee, legendary Studio One vocalist Earl 16 alongside Chris Compton on guitar and Chris Oldfield on technology.

LONDON MOTORISTS PREPARE TO ENJOY A SUMMER OF DRIV - Added by admin
Starts: 7/22/2010

LONDON MOTORISTS PREPARE TO ENJOY A SUMMER OF DRIVE-IN MOVIES AT ALEXANDRA PALACE

Forget M25 motorway mayhem and traffic black spots - this summer is all about leaving behind London congestion and getting stuck into a giant bucket of popcorn in the comfort of your car in a great British setting, courtesy of RAC Drive-in Movies.

Throughout August, a series of drive-in movie events, featuring box office smashes and iconic films will be screened outdoors at Alexandra Palace. Chosen for its beautiful gardens and architecture, Alexandra Palace will provide a stunning backdrop for three unique evening events. Tickets are available to everyone on a first-come, first-served basis and can be purchased at www.rac.co.uk/movies.

Films showing are:

Transformers (rated 12) on Thursday 12 August
Dirty Dancing (rated 12) on Friday 13 August
The Italian Job (1969) on Saturday 14 August

The films have been chosen to suit all tastes, with cars and driving at the heart of each plot - from Patrick Swayze’s 1957 Chevy, to the iconic Italian Job mini, to the many robot vehicles of Transformers.

To mark the events, RAC is attempting a world record by creating the UK’s biggest ever popcorn box, standing a mighty 16 foot tall. The popcorn box, which can hold over a tonne of popcorn (more than one million popcorn kernels), made an appearance at Alexandra Palace Sunday 27th June where film star lookalikes also handed out popcorn to passers-by.

For each event, gates will open at 7pm and screenings start at 9pm. With up to 100 cars permitted, the events are set to be the ultimate drive-in experience and the perfect night out with friends and family.

Tickets are priced at £15 for RAC Members and £30 for non-members, with one ticket admitting one car. The ticket includes two free portions of popcorn and two free drinks per car, plus RAC Members will be entitled to additional perks.

Chris Bates, head of marketing, RAC, comments: “At RAC, as the driving people, we pride ourselves on understanding today's drivers. We know that congestion, potholes and the cost of fuel can make driving anything but enjoyable at times, particularly in the London area where motorists experience some of the most congested traffic conditions in the country. We’re launching RAC Drive-in Movies to help put a little bit of fun back into the driving experience this summer. The events are all about creating unique nights out where London’s motorists can enjoy a truly pleasurable experience from the comfort of their car.”

Have your own Movie Moment

Whether you manage to get your hands on a Drive-in movie ticket or not, you can still get in on the action with RAC’s Movie Moments competition. Hosted at www.rac.co.uk/movies, people are being invited to re-create their own favourite film scenes to be in with a chance of winning a trip for two to Los Angeles, movie capital of the world. Better still, the winning entry will be proudly previewed at each RAC Drive-in Movie.

So what are you waiting for? Get your tickets before they go, and be part of an amazing movie experience from the comfort of your car.

Terms and Conditions apply for each of the events and can be viewed at www.rac.co.uk/movies.

Wives More Likely to Cheat on Holiday Than Husbands
It’s that time of year again; a time when Britons will be jetting off far and wide to enjoy the roasting temperatures of foreign shores. But even when holidaying with their spouses, new research from married dating site IllicitEncounters.com shows that most cheating spouses are reluctant to give up their unfaithful ways.

The study of 800 men and 800 women revealed that 33% of cheating spouses have had an affair while on holiday, and 6% have dared to cheat while on holiday with their spouse. The majority of respondents expressed their wish to have an illicit holiday fling, although they had not done the deed yet.

The findings also indicated that married women are more likely to stray when holidaying with friends than married men; a sure surprise to those husbands who always saw their wives’ girly getaways in an innocent light. 16% of the site’s female membership said they had been unfaithful whilst abroad with friends; only 11% of men admitted the same.

In addition, 63% of cheaters said they would prefer to holiday with their illicit lover, as opposed to their married partner; just 18% felt they wanted to get away with their husband or wife. The study also found that an overwhelming majority of philandering spouses would choose the Maldives over any destination for an illicit liaison (27%).

“Sunshine is a real aphrodisiac.” says Sara Hartley, representative at IllicitEncounters.com. “We have always seen an increase in activity on the site during the summer months, so it strikes me as no surprise that wives and husbands who cheat at home would struggle to stay faithful while abroad. For men, the sight of all those scantily clad beach bunnies may prove too tempting, and we know, from our female members, that waiters in particular tend to oblige when it comes to innocent, and not-so-innocent, flirting”

In a blow for families, male cheaters appear to be happier to spend more on taking their lover abroad than their wife and kids. IllicitEncounters.com found the average male member spends between £2500 and £3000 on a holiday with his mistress. In comparison, Tesco Finance found that the average family holiday spend is around £2,076. The majority of female members on IE would choose to go Dutch with their lover.

Jenny*, 34, from Shropshire, describes her experience of adultery abroad, “I had only been married for four years, and although things were less exciting at home, I never expected that I would cheat on holiday. A group of single friends and I went to Spain last August, and while we were there, the three of them frequently bought men back to the hotel. However, on the last night, I met an ex-pat Londoner at a local bar, and we got drunk together. I just didn’t wish to deny myself the excitement; it all happened very quickly, but it was so exhilarating to feel that freedom again. I have no intention of telling my spouse; I joined the site straight afterwards and have had several extramarital affairs here at home.”

IllicitEncounters.com was set up in 2003 to provide a platform for married people to find lovers. The site expect their membership to reach half a million later this month.

*Names have been changed to protect identity

Larsen B are named after an Antarctic ice shelf, though the bands sound couldnt be further away from the cold image it conjures. Hailing from Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire (though calling it by the doomsday book recorded Watamestede) Will Baguley, Simon Palmer and Paddy Smith formed Larsen B with the intention of weaving glorious and well crafted pop songs for the world to hear.

Their first EP The Treasured Memories of Cecil Element released in 2007 began the journey into their current incarnation from a more country tinged sound, before signing to Try Harder Records (Foals, Blood Red Shoes, Joy Formidable) in 2008.

On Try Harder they released their second EP Marilyn to a chorus of delighted praise, garnering attention everywhere from Mark Radcliffe to Michael Hann, The Guardians music editor. Marilyns inclusion on this album is a welcome one as the tracks shimmering quality and infectious chorus leaves you wondering whether anyone in the world could ever feel anything but endearment to the tune.

Recorded at the Stables in Watamestede, listening to an album is sometimes like taking a tour of their village. The Gold Cup swings by the Church for a spot of rapturous praise, before inviting the local postman around for a jam on Kindling (the backing vocals here are indeed, provided by their postman). The album is filled with warm tunes, massive choruses and the innocence that good pop ever so rarely even catches a glimpse of.

Set to arrive in stores on July 5th through Old Radio Tunes, forthcoming debut album Musketeer echoes the atmosphere of Summer so strongly you begin to wonder if Wheathampstead has ever suffered through a harsh Winter, a golden Autumn is as close as we ever get.

THE JIM JONES REVUE - Added by admin
Starts: 7/22/2010
Ends: 10/22/2010

THE JIM JONES REVUE

New Album - BURNING YOUR HOUSE DOWN - September 6th
New Single - High Horse - August 23rd

UK Summer Festivals - Latitude, Hop Farm, Bestival, Tapestry

“The greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world right now” - Phil Alexander, MOJO

The Jim Jones Revue's new album Burning Your House Down will be released by Punk Rock Blues Records / [PIAS] Recordings on September 6th. Produced by Jim Sclavunos (of Nick Cave &The Bad Seeds/Grinderman), Burning Your House Down captures the roar of an untamed band at the top of their game. With the microphone shredding wail of the incomparable Jim Jones at the helm, fearlessly spurred by Rupert Orton’s six-string maelstrom, Elliot Mortimer’s savaged ivories and the jackhammer rhythm section of drummer Nick Jones and bassist Gavin Jay, The Jim Jones Revue swing like a giant ball and chain.

In the last few years The Jim Jones Revue have swiftly progressed from their earliest shows in the dive bars of East London to staking their claim as an unstoppable force on today’s British rock 'n' roll scene. Since the day Steve Lamacq announced on his 6 Music show "I think I may have something here" and proceeded to play tracks from the band's eponymous debut album, The Jim Jones Revue juggernaut has not looked back.
The first single off Burning Your House Down will be High Horse due August 23rd. Complementing this release, The Jim Jones Revue play an array of UK Summer festival dates including Latitude, Hop Farm, Bestival, and Tapestry. Later this year a world tour commences, encompassing the UK, Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. Extending from late 2010 into 2011, the band is destined to leave a trail of scorched earth in its wake.

A rabid fan-base and radio DJ champions like Marc Riley, Gideon Coe, Mark Lamarr and John Kennedy have made The Jim Jones Revue a true international underground sensation. Steve Lamacq’s on-air heads up to Jack White led directly to The Jim Jones Revue scoring a support slot with Dead Weather. MOJO has hailed them as one of the bands to look out for in 2010, with a nomination in this year's MOJO Honours List for a "Best Newcomer Award". With heaps of accolades, it’s no wonder the band’s star continues to rise; with Burning Your House Down there's a fair chance they'll soar straight into orbit.

Skylark Summer Sizzle - Added by admin

Skylark Summer Sizzle

The heat has sent artistic minds into overdrive this summer, with a scorching exhibition at the www.southbanklondon.com/attraction/oxogallery from July 29th to August 15th.

Featuring over 25 painters, print-makers and sculptors from Skylark, London's leading artist-run galleries, the show promises a huge variety of summer-inspired pieces, along with a series of interactive events to bring out the creative side of gallery visitors.

"We are putting together a vibrant and exciting collection of works by our emerging and established artists," says Skylark Director, Gill Hickman. "We intend that the www.southbanklondon.com/attraction/oxogallery will positively sizzle with the creative heat and colour shining out from the selected pieces. For visitors wanting more information, exhibiting artists will give talks & demonstrations, and being holiday time there will be a programme of activities for children including an art treasure hunt."

With exhibiting artists on hand every day, visitors will get the chance to chat to the experts about what's on show, techniques and inspirations.
The range of Skylark artists should mean plenty of conversation: whether you favour the photorealism of Trinidad Ball's exquisite prickly pears against piercing blue skies, the pure abstraction of Eileen Martin's hot-palette oils, or the ice-cool beauty of Steve Yeates' recycled glass figures, there is definitely something for every visitor.

London's unique city atmosphere is celebrated in the bold, abstract citiscapes of Sara Sherwood and the more graphic lines of James Hobbs. Jo Hodgen captures childhood summers in her cheeky textural canvases of kids playing in rock pools, while Michelle Elwell's aluminium mounted digital flower prints have a fantastic romantic lyricism. Also featured are Gill Hickman's Energy Cells, which explore the microscopic beauty of the human body in a riot of reds, oranges and golds.

Ben Mosley's bold football canvases offer visitors the chance to take home a souvenir of the agony and ecstasy of the 2010 World Cup or, for those whose thoughts are more attuned to summer loving, Sally Swingewood's series of bright kisses might be more appealing.

All art on show is for sale and can be taken away immediately, ..... and with prices for unframed work starting from £30 there's bound to be something for everyone.

The artist-run Skylark Galleries are well established on the South Bank; Skylark 1 has been in Gabriel's Wharf since the mid 1990's, and Skylark 2 has been in the Oxo Tower since 2001. There are currently 33 artists.

PVT Announce Details Of Their New Album, New Name - Added by admin
Starts: 7/22/2010

PIVOT = PVT

PVT Announce Details Of Their New Album, New Name & Innovative New Video

PVT Announce UK Tour and Free Download of 'Window' from http://www.pvtpvt.net

PVT (formerly known as Pivot), return with their highly anticipated new album, Church With No Magic, released August 9th through Warp Records. In support of the release, the band will tour Europe & the UK throughout September and October.

Their previous tours have seen them playing shows with Yellow Magic Orchestra, Sigur Ros, The Arctic Monkeys, Gary Numan and at the Brian Eno curated Luminous Festival, Glastonbury Festival & the sold out Warp 20 Festival in Paris.

Out on the road for the first time this year, this is a chance to be one of the first to experience the new material live. Church With No Magic is an album that builds upon the anthemic synth-driven instrumental movements for which PVT is renowned, along with the power of their visceral live shows. The sound has been brilliantly tempered and expanded by the trio into brooding, melancholic experimental pop - an amalgam of rock synthesis, propulsive rhythms and huge melodic strength.

Praise for PVTs previous album:

"Utterly mesmerising" Independent on Sunday

"...Australian threesome Pivot don't so much defy categorization as skewer the notion with a big stick and jam it into sequencers." Rock Sound

Whichever way they turn, Pivot are on the right track. Time Out

Put your trust in the Sydney trio and the rewards are great... beyond the noise, they're clearly having fun. It'd be rude not to join in NME

Tour Dates:
28th September - UK, Manchester - Deaf Institute
29th September - UK, Glasgow - Stereo
30th September - UK, Leeds - Brudenell
2nd October - UK, Bristol - Start The Bus
3rd October - UK, Brighton - Audio
4th October - UK, Nottingham - Bodega
6th October - UK, London - Cargo

Church With No Magic, the follow-up to PVTs 2008 album O Soundtrack My Heart, released on August 9th through Warp Records, reflects a literal and sonic transformation for the band, demonstrated first in the form of lead single Window and its powerful new video (see it here: pvtpvt.net)

The track is typical of the dense collisions of PVTs sound world. Its a heady combination of vocal experimentation, swirling keyboard arpeggios and pounding drums, all topped by the bands adeptness for emotive harmony and clear melodic punch, distilled into three minutes.

Directed by Clemens Habicht (Friendly Fires, Quasimodo Jones) and edited at the Abbey Road Studios, the video for 'Window' uses an innovative camera technique to capture the intensity and vigor of the band's live performance.

Inverting the experience of watching a band perform, Clemens had PVT record themselves by wearing a small point of view camera while on tour. Seen from a first person perspective, the band and sound is split visually into its three component parts, then rhythmically layered. The result is an immersive performance video experience. We are given a unique chance to feel what it might possibly be like being in PVT, on tour, on stage.

>From the start, there was an urgency to secure the sound that would become Church With No Magic. Just one month after they handed over the master of O Soundtrack My Heart to the label boss, the three members of PVT were in the studio in Sydney with engineer Burke Reid.

Church With No Magic was a different process for PVT. For a start, they found themselves in the same countries at the same times. It took them from Sydney to a basement studio in London with one of Europes largest collections of vintage synthesizers including the Yamaha CS80 famously used for the Blade Runner soundtrack - to a grandmothers music room in a 120 year old house in the countryside near Paris, juggling live commitments along the way.

Their efforts would take the form of Church With No Magic, an album that builds upon the anthemic synth-driven instrumental movements for which PVT is renowned, along with the power of their visceral live shows. The sound has been brilliantly tempered and expanded by the trio into brooding, melancholic experimental pop - an amalgam of rock synthesis, propulsive rhythms and huge melodic strength. Its a dark and expansive sound that PVT has made substantial movements on this record to make their own.

The most notable development on Church With No Magic are the vocals of multi-instrumentalist Richard Pike. While the band have often used vocals in the past, particularly live, this album sees them taking on a more central role within the songs, as layers of Richards voice build amongst the music, adding an intense melodic focus to the contorting rhythms and bewildering space generated by the band.

Rich has always sung, ever since we were kids, but its just not something that ever happened in PVT in such a direct way until now, says brother Laurence.

The other obvious change is the band name itself, from Pivot to PVT. The change was a necessary one, the result of an unexpected legal claim from a band in the United States that used the same name.

It was frustrating and kind of ridiculous, says Richard. But it became quickly obvious that it was a legal battle in the US we may not even win, and one we just couldnt afford to lose. So in the end, we werent fazed by it. Altering the name just seemed to be another step in the process for the record to come out and be heard, an attitude that seems to reflect the ongoing evolution and burgeoning momentum within the band.Go to Top of Page

DEBUT SOLO ALBUM ‘ALL THE PIECES’ - Added by admin
Starts: 7/22/2010
Ends: 10/22/2010

DEBUT SOLO ALBUM ‘ALL THE PIECES’
& UK TOUR ANNOUNCED

Mark Chadwick has announced details of the release of his debut solo album, entitled All The Pieces, to be released through Stay By Records on 6 September 2010, and a 10 date UK tour in October.

One of the UK’s most successful songwriters, Mark Chadwick has co-written 20 chart singles and 6 Top 40 albums (including a Number 1) as part of The Levellers, the band he has fronted for nearly 25 years.

All The Pieces is however, not a Levellers album. Whilst the voice may be familiar, that is where the similarities end. Instead, this is an intensely personal collection of wonderfully crafted 3 minute pop songs, written and refined over the course of the last two decades.

Brought to life by award-winning producer Sean Lakeman, Mark is joined by an ‘all star cast’ of some of the UK’s greatest folk musicians on the album. Both Sean and Seth Lakeman, along with Dan Donnelly (Watercress, Sonovagun), Martin Pannett (McDermott’s 2 Hours), Toby May (Clearlake), Daniel Goddard (aka DBG) and Ben Nicholls (Dennis Hopper’s Choppers) all perform on the album, and Mark’s singing is complemented by the astoundingly beautiful voice of Equation’s Kathryn Roberts.

All the Pieces is available to pre-order now with signed copies of the album available with pre-orders from www.play.com. A limited edition ‘All The Pieces’ collector’s pack featuring 12” vinyl or CD album plus t-shirt, cotton tote bag and screen print is available to pre-order exclusively from www.recordstore.co.uk.

All The Pieces is, to all intents and purposes, Mark Chadwick telling the story of his own life, in his own words. Presented chronologically, it charts the highs and lows of his extraordinary life, encompassing life-altering events such as attending Elephant Fayre which helped shaped his political views, falling in (and subsequently out of) love, through to his later disillusion with both mainstream and radical politics. This album shows a side of Mark Chadwick’s song-writing and personality that up to now he has largely kept out of the public eye. Honest and heartfelt, yet highly accessible and endearingly upbeat, All The Pieces shares many of its hallmarks with the great folk revival albums of the 60’s and early 70’s. Anyone expecting a Levellers sound-alike album will be disappointed, but those with an ear for beautifully produced acoustic-pop, great melodies and engaging lyrics will most certainly not.

Mark Chadwick’s October tour goes on sale on 12 July. He will be joined on tour by a band featuring guest musicians plus support to be announced.

Timber Timbre stops you. The elements are deceptively simple: a confident, but hushed voice, understated guitar, strings and keyboard flourishes, and a subtle percussive beat. Timber Timbre, led by guitarist/vocalist Taylor Kirk, is haunted by the history of pop music.

Timber Timbre have gained a devoted following with their spellbinding performances at unusual venues around Toronto and more recently supporting Owen Pallett across Canada and his first ever U.S. tour, and touring as special guests in the US to Low Anthem. Their music has evolved from dusty, low-fi bedroom blues to the sophisticated, cinematic studio work, and the formation of the band as a true three-piece, with Kirk joined by Mika Posen on violin and Simon Trottier on lap steel, autoharp and synth.

Originally released in Canada in January, Timber Timbre received an international release through Arts & Crafts this past Summer. In Canada, the album beat out Girls, Dirty Projectors, The xx and Animal Collective, whilst in the U.S. tastemaker radio stations KCRW in Los Angeles and KEXP in Seattle were quick to jump on board.

Timber Timbre is a stunning record that captures the listener’s attention with what is there as much as what is not. The sum of the parts, however, is something grounded in a strange place where genre descriptions like blues, country, and folk intersect becoming secondary to the precision of the moods being conjured.

SANDIE SHAW, ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS TO “RECLAIM THE - Added by admin
Starts: 7/22/2010
Ends: 8/31/2010

SANDIE SHAW, ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS TO “RECLAIM THE SONG” AT VINTAGE AT GOODWOOD ON 13THAUGUST

FEATURING SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTER, MICA PARIS, BERYL MARSDEN, CORINNE DREWERY, KATHRYN WILLIAMS, NATASHA MARSH, LINDA LEWIS, SANDI THOM AND TAHITA BULMER

Vintage at Goodwood // Goodwood Estate // 13 – 15 August

On Friday 13th August, at the first ever Vintage at Goodwood Festival, legendary pop icon Sandie Shaw will be accompanied by an orchestra and her choice of female singers to reclaim songs that were originally associated with men. Appearing on the ‘Inspired By’ main stage, this carefully selected set will feature some of the best contemporary talent who have been inspired by Sandie Shaw.

Songs confirmed to feature in “Reclaim the Song” range from ‘Common People' by Pulp to ‘It's A Man's World' By James Brown, to No Woman no Cry' by Bob Marley And The Wailers, among many others.

Sandie says: “I am intrigued by what happens to the song when a woman interprets a song originally associated with a man and looking forward to sharing the stage at Vintage at Goodwood with some of today’s most talented and creative female musicians. Our interpretations of these songs can be highly amusing, deeply moving or thought provoking. It can either have a subtle nuance that gives a new twist to its meaning or it can turn it completely on its head. For instance Under My Thumb becomes a complete role reversal, No Woman No Cry becomes a song sung for all women who have experienced grief, Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others changed to 'Some Boys' - well, need I explain? It is also an opportunity for me to honour the women who I have admired and been inspired by over the years and those that particularly excite me at the moment.

Coined ‘The Festival of Our Lives’, Vintage at Goodwood will take place 13-15 August and will combine the best of British cool from the 1940s – 1980s ranging: music, fashion, art, design and culture. Co-founded by Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway (of Red or Dead) and Lord March, Vintage at Goodwood will be a carefully curated, rather than randomly scheduled programme, which aims to pro-actively combine music and fashion alongside art and design.

Wayne Hemingway says: “We are incredibly excited that Sandie Shaw and all the girls that have agreed to appear at Vintage at Goodwood and to Sandie for coming up with this idea and curating this set. Not only is it a celebration of past Vintage, but also a look towards future Vintage and what inspires it, and the collaboration between everyone here just seems to epitomises this.”

At Vintage at Goodwood, Sandie Shaw will be featured alongside an inspirational line up of iconic British legends, world renowned DJs and bands spanning 5 decades plus the best new contemporary artists whose work owes a debt to these legends and icons.

Apples, pears, pumpkins and mushrooms are just some of the fruit and vegetables that visitors will be able taste and learn more about. This year national Apple Day, which falls on 21st October, will celebrate its 21st anniversary and the RHS Taste of Autumn festival activity is focused on the following weekend (23 and 24 October).

Wisley has over 700 varieties of apples, many of them hundreds of years old. The Taste of Autumn events include displays of unusual apple varieties, tastings and advice, as well as apple-bobbing for the children. Wisley will also host this year’s European Europom festival to coincide with Taste of Autumn, where fruit collectors from societies of growers and fruit organisations from all over Europe will exhibit their produce.

Llais y Goedwig Woodland Management Roadshow

How will climate change effect Woodlands in Wales? Community woodland network has the data...stick!

Llais y Goedwig, the community woodland network in Wales, has heeded the warnings about climate change and is taking action, thanks to a grant from Environment Wales. Volunteer, Adam Thorogood, a forestry student at Bangor University, has spent several months pulling together a library of reports and articles relating to climate change and welsh woodlands. These resources will be made available to community groups by Llais y Goedwig in the form of wooden USB data sticks made from certified sustainable timber.

Llais y Goedwig will tour the country this summer with the Woodland Management Roadshow, distributing the wooden datasticks and delivering a series of talks and workshops relating to all aspects of community woodland management, including the changes to be made in the face of a shifting climate.

“Our forests and woodlands in Wales are under threat from climate change,” said Adam Thorogood, “dangerous levels of greenhouse gas emissions are changing weather patterns, shifting seasonal timings, and creating niches for new pests and diseases. Such threats will change our woodland cover in Wales, community groups are going to have to adapt fast.”

Welsh woodlands will also be under increased pressure to meet fuel and timber demands both locally and nationally due to a rise in use of renewable energy systems for heat and electricity and the rising costs of fossil fuel derived products. With these multiple threats and demands placed on woods, it will be important to make the right management decisions so that our woodlands continue to thrive and provide well into the future.

The Woodland Management Roadshows are taking place across Wales this summer to help existing and would-be community woodland groups develop their woodland management skills base. The first event is in Llangennech (near Swansea) on Saturday July 17th and it will be a great chance to network with groups and individuals involved in woodlands and forestry and to learn from a series of expert-delivered workshops. Lunch will be provided followed by a woodland visit to near-by Troserch Woods in the afternoon.

Woodlands in Wales are havens for biodiversity, resources for fuel and timber and they store and fix carbon dioxide. Llais y Goedwig will help community woodland groups to share knowledge and support each other as our climate changes, as well a providing a platform for communication with the Welsh Assembly Government on policy matters relating to woodlands. The Woodland Management Roadshow is your chance to get involved!

www.vauxhallmotorsbc.co.uk

Dust off your flat cap, don your best white trousers or pleated skirt and slip on your slip-ons, because on 1st August for one day only Brick Lane in London will undergo a major transformation into a professional standard bowling green, courtesy of Vauxhall Motors.

We’ll have two very special masters of ceremony; comedian Matt Horne (who will be playing some lovely summer tunes) and t4 presenter Rick Edwards, who will be on site all day to eat ice cream, feel the grass between his toes, have a potter on the bowls lawn and possibly adjudicate any tricky games. Music will be provided by legendary DJ Toddla T and bowlers will be treated to a super special performance from band of the moment, Man Like Me.

After the hugely popular roller disco extravaganza that was Vauxhall Skate and the cool Vauxhall Ice Skate comes something a little different. Traditional bowls takes a trip - Mary Poppins meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and goes on a colourful, summery Sunday adventure complimented with top bands, dancing, lounging and stylish 4-wheeled art commissions - all inspired by the Vauxhall Motors Bowls Club of past decades.

If you’re no expert DO NOT FEAR, some old pros will be on hand to show you the bowls ropes and help perfect your delivery with skill and finesse.

Want to be a member of our club? Join us for a laid back Sunday afternoon of draws and fades, cream teas, music by one of the UK's most exciting live bands and great celebrity DJ sets, all to be confirmed when the time is right. It’s not right now, but it will be soon.

So whether you fancy aiming your woods at our Jack, or simply hanging out with the band, apply for tickets now to make sure you don't miss out on the hottest (hopefully) and laziest event of the summer.

To apply for your exclusive FREE ticket visit or for more information visit; www.vauxhallmotorsbc.co.uk or follow us on Twitter @vauxhallbowling to keep up to date on fixtures and meet details.

To mark the launch of the Vauxhall Motor’s Bowling season we’ve teamed up with London-based fashion designer Tansy Hamley to create the ultimate bowls bag. The Corsa inspired accessory can squeeze in your bowls, jacks, sensible shoes, a cucumber sandwich and a flask of tea. What more could you possible want.

Vauxhall Motors continue their long-standing relationship with up-and-coming design talents for their latest event. Having teamed up with British fashion designer Emma Bell, artistic talent Kate Moross and illustrator extraordinaire Si Scott for the last three successful events, Jamie Cullum has been added to the logo designer hall of fame. Well known for his bright and bold designs which incorporate layers of visual discovery with emerging hidden elements, Jamie has created the ultimate retro-inspired event crest for the Vauxhall Motors Bowling Club.

FUTURE CINEMA PRESENTS BLUE VELVET, A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO THE LATE SCREEN LEGEND DENNIS HOPPER

Future Cinema, creators of the acclaimed Secret Cinema, presents a very special screening tribute to the late, great Dennis Hopper with a unique screening of David Lynch’s 1986 cult classic Blue Velvet on Saturday 31st July.

Taking place at the Troxy, one of London’s oldest cinema spaces and the site of Secret Cinema’s famous Bugsy Malone events in November 2009, the night promises to be an exciting mix of cult film, live music, food, drink and much more to celebrate the life and work of cinema’s favourite rebel.

Tickets are on sale now at £15.00 (£12.50 Concessions) from http://www.wegottickets.com/f/1836

The audience are invited to come dressed as their favourite Hopper character or leading lady.

Dennis Hopper’s career spanned over 5 decades throughout which he became known as one of Hollywood’s most unconventional and charismatic icons. Starring in some of cinema’s most recognisable classics including Rebel Without A Cause, Apocalypse Now and Easy Rider, Hopper played an important role in redefining the face of cinema – representing a new breed of idealist, risk-taking filmmakers who broke from convention in the 1960s and beyond. The icon tragically died of cancer in May this year.

“Dennis Hopper lived and breathed cinema, a true rebel whose work has inspired many,” says Fabien Riggall, Founder and Creative Director of Future Cinema. “Blue Velvet is a dark and strangely beautiful film in which he had created one of the most compelling villains of all time”.

The tribute screening also marks the first in an ongoing campaign by Future Cinema to reclaim the cinema-going experience by bringing it back to the local community. By taking cinema out of multiplexes and into unique venues around London and the UK, Future Cinema aim to unite local audiences, encourage debate and celebrate the true spirit of cinema.

Driving Instructor warns of new online test scam
Learner drivers are at risk of paying more than they need to for driving tests by booking through unofficial websites, reveals Adrian Baldry of AN Baldry School of Motoring, one of the top driving schools in Suffolk.
The third-party websites are charging learners additional administration fees to book their theory and practical driving tests, a service that the official Driving Standards Agency (DSA) website offers at no extra cost.
Adrian, who has more than 14 years experience in driver training, advises learners to be careful when booking their tests and avoid such scams; “The best way round it is to always book through the official site. It’s worrying that so many third-party sites have started popping up and I want to draw the public’s attention to the issue. The unnecessary mark-ups are a rip-off when drivers can just as easily book online for a basic fee with the authorised DSA site.”
However, by placing the letters DSA in their search listings which show up on Google, many of the sites confuse young drivers into thinking that they are booking through the official DSA site.
In some cases, learners have paid more than £50 to book their theory test, which only costs £31 when booked directly through the DSA’s own website. “It’s a wasted expense that few learners, or their parents, can afford,” said Adrian.
The official website for information is www.dsa.gov.uk and to book a test is www.direct.gov.uk/drivingtest. This link can also be found on Adrian Baldry’s website www.anbaldryschoolofmotoring.co.uk.
A N Baldry School of Motoring is a well-established driving school with an excellent pass rate. Call Adrian Baldry on 01449 616711 for further information or to book driving lessons.

Sebastien Buemi
(STR5-02)
“The morning session went well, as the driver can make more of a difference in the wet conditions and I was P7, looking competitive, but in the dry, we need to find a better set-up. Therefore, we need to work hard now, analysing the data to try and improve the car for tomorrow. We had some new elements on the car here, so we have to assess how to get the best from them. The dry tyre comparison went well and we have a pretty clear picture of how to use them.”
First Practice Session - Best lap 1.28.114, pos. 7th, 31 laps
Second Practice Session - Best lap 1.18.147, pos. 17th, 45 laps

Jaime Alguersuari
(STR5-03)
“It was an interesting day, dealing with both wet and dry conditions. We can be reasonably satisfied, because we completed a lot of laps and I am pleased not to have made any mistakes in the wet. However, my lack of experience at this track meant I was unable to make the most of the super-soft Option tyre, setting my fastest lap on old tyres, so a good run on new tyres could have made a significant difference to my lap time. At least I now know the track, although my confidence was not so high in these mixed conditions.”
First Practice Session - Best lap 1.29.366, pos. 16th, 34 laps
Second Practice Session - Best lap 1.19.327, pos. 18th, 48 laps

Laurent Mekies (Chief Engineer): “We had a trouble free day with both drivers completing a lot of laps. In the morning, we were able to evaluate the extreme wet and the intermediate tyres, working in race conditions, to see in what situations both compounds were at their best. Jaime even tried the dry tyres in damp conditions this morning, which is good in terms of him building experience. Overall, in these difficult conditions, the drivers made no mistakes which is another positive element. This afternoon, in the dry, we returned to our routine Friday work, evaluating different aero components, as well as working on car set-up on the two dry tyre compounds. Both behaved quite well and the results of running on the two rain tyres in the morning also proved that they last well on this trackGo to Top of Page

MANFRED PERNICE

1 October – 21 November 2010

Modern Art Oxford presents new and recent work by the German artist Manfred Pernice in his first solo exhibition in a UK public gallery. This exhibition will travel from Oxford to Dundee Contemporary Arts and then to SMAK in Ghent in 2011.

Manfred Pernice creates objects and sculptures that consider the complex relationships between art, architecture, city-building and human stories of time and place. Formed of a language that is immediately and distinctively recognisable, his sculptures suggest themselves as already existing in the everyday world. This exhibition however presents developments in Pernice’s practice over the last three years, in particular a passage of work the artist has come to describe as ‘Sonderausstellung’ (special exhibition).

‘Sonderaustellung’ constitutes the creation of a new artistic strategy for Pernice, one that provides a conceptual and physical housing in which to locate his formal, investigative research. Describing such work as 'an exhibition within an exhibition', recent projects have manifested themselves as more overtly domestic in their resonance, a world of the familial as opposed to the distinct references to the public realm and the built, urban environment that characterised his past practice.

In a relatively recent work for instance, Sonderausstellung: Wishy washy (2009), sculptures that evoke seating and utilitarian furniture are strategically placed, domestic lighting features prominently, the residue of food packaging and containers are overtly displayed and even stubbed cigarette butts and empty coffee cups are encapsulated within the work as evidence of the labour of making.

The centre-piece of the exhibition will be the re-presentation of a new work, Tutti (2010). Referencing Pernice’s earlier ‘can’ structures or Dosen, the sculpture reveals four room-sized quadrants, and is complete with a spiral staircase that elevates the viewer. This sculpture as vessel will ‘house’ part of the exhibition as well as becoming the site for various settings, its content rearticulated and modified as it journeys from place to place.

Manfred Pernice is organised by Modern Art Oxford, in collaboration with Dundee Contemporary Arts and SMAK, Ghent. The exhibition will first be shown throughout Modern Art Oxford's Upper Galleries, from 1 October – 21 November 2010, before travelling to Dundee and Ghent in 2011.

A fully illustrated publication co-published by Modern Art Oxford, Dundee Contemporary Arts and SMAK, Ghent will be available.

Showing concurrently with Manfred Pernice, will be Simon and Tom Bloor, 1 October – 21 November 2010.

Supported by The Henry Moore Foundation and the The Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations, ifa).

SIMON & TOM BLOOR: HIT AND MISS - Added by admin

SIMON & TOM BLOOR: HIT AND MISS

1 October – 21 November 2010

For the second in a series of new commissions for The Yard, Simon & Tom Bloor will draw on influences from across art, design and architecture to transform the space at Modern Art Oxford.

The Bloors’ artworks encompass a range of approaches and are developed from research into moments of Utopian potential, from political or social events to periods of art or design history. Rather than simply celebrating such moments, the Bloors attempt to playfully address the all too human flaws and failings that underpin them. Ideas and information from seemingly diverse sources are combined as starting points for something new, creating shifts in context that encourage new relationships and alternative readings.

For Modern Art Oxford the artists will create an installation from painted wooden fencing that will act in a variety of ways – as a maze-like screening structure, as a means to create intimate resting spaces within The Yard and as a support for other new works. Using a form of ‘hit and miss’ fencing the installation will further develop themes explored in the Bloors’ previous projects that look to municipal urban and suburban architecture and landscape design, drawing on hazily familiar structural forms to explore nostalgic notions of Britain’s much maligned postwar developments.

Sitting somewhere between a garden park and interior lobby the Bloors’ project will be a space for visitors to explore and discover a further element of the installation in the form of a series of works on paper based on a selection of posters from Modern Art Oxford’s archive. Re-imagining posters for group and solo exhibitions that included artworld luminaries such as Donald Judd, Sol Lewitt, Carl Andre and Dan Graham, the Bloors’ posters will playfully engage their interest in appropriation, printed media and nostalgia, while offering up new interpretations for their fencing structures.

WEST END TRANSFER FOR ERICH SEGAL’S

L O V E S T O R Y

The Chichester Festival Theatre production of Love Story will transfer to the West End previewing at the Duchess Theatre from 27 November, with press night on 6 December 2010. Love Story, which is produced in the West End by Michael Ball – making his producing debut, Adam Spiegel and Stephen Waley-Cohen, is currently booking until 26 February 2011.

Oliver Barrett IV went to Harvard and Jenny Cavilleri to Radcliffe. He was rich, she was poor. He was sporty, she played music. But they fell in love. This is their story.

Erich Segal’s best-selling novel, Love Story, became one of the most romantic films of all time, has sold over 21 million copies world-wide and has been published in 33 languages.

This new musical version of Love Story, inspired by Erich Segal’s novel, is directed by Rachel Kavanaugh, with music by Howard Goodall, book by Stephen Clark and lyrics by Stephen Clark and Howard Goodall. Love Story, which enjoyed a run at The Chichester Festival Theatre earlier this year, is designed by Peter McKintosh with musical direction by Stephen Ridley. Casting will be announced shortly.

Emmy, Brit and BAFTA award-winning Howard Goodall is one of the UK’s most versatile and distinguished composers having written choral music, stage musicals, film and TV scores. Goodall was appointed as England's first ever National Ambassador for Singing, he is the Classical Brit Composer of the Year and Classic FM's Composer-in-Residence and a highly respected broadcaster and an energetic campaigner for music education. His extensive scores include Q.I., The Vicar of Dibley, The Gathering Storm, The Borrowers, The Catherine Tate Show, Mr Bean, Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie, Mr Bean's Holiday and Blackadder. Previously his musical theatre compositions include The Hired Man, Girlfriends, Days of Hope, Catwalk, The Kissing Dance and The Dreaming.

Stephen Clark’s work includes Mahabharata for Sadler’s Wells, The Far Pavilions at the Shaftesbury Theatre, the Laurence Olivier award-winning Martin Guerre at the Prince Edward Theatre, La Traviata for English National Opera and Zorro at the Garrick Theatre and Folies Bergère, Paris.

Love Story is directed by Rachel Kavanaugh, Artistic Director of Birmingham Repertory Theatre where her many credits include Hapgood, Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure and Uncle Vanya as well as David Hare’s Racing Demon, Murmuring Judges and The Absence Of War. Her other credits include The Music Man starring Brian Conley and A Small Family Business for Chichester Festival Theatre, The Merry Wives of Windsor and Alice in Wonderland for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Hilda for Hampstead Theatre and The Rivals for Bristol Old Vic.

Michael Ball makes his producing debut with Love Story. His many West End credits include originating the role of Edna Turnblad in Hairspray, produced by Adam Spiegel, and for which he won the Laurence Olivier and Whatsonstage Awards for Best Actor in a Musical. He can currently be seen on tour in the UK reprising the role of Edna. His other theatre roles include Marius in Les Misérables, Giorgio in Stephen Sondheim’s Passion, Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera, Alex in Aspects of Love, Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Count Fosco in The Woman in White in the West End and on Broadway. His made his English National Opera debut as Hajj/Poet in Kismet and in 2005 he made his debut with the New York City Opera as Reginald Bunthrone in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience. As well as his Sunday Brunch for BBC Radio, he will present a new series for ITV, The Michael Ball Show, starting next month. His 15 solo albums have all achieved gold or platinum status and his discography includes: Michael Ball, Always, One Careful Owner, First Love, The Musicals, The Movies, Music, One Voice and the superb homage to Burt Bacharach, Michael Ball – Back To Bacharach.

HEIDI TALBOT - Added by admin
Starts: 7/23/2010

HEIDI TALBOT

The Last Star

Album released October 4th 2010 (CD/Digital Navigator 043)
UK Tour Sept 2nd Oct 24th (dates below)

Ireland has long been a font of great female singers, but Heidi Talbots breakthrough solo release, 2008s In Love + Light, swiftly assured her promotion to the premier league. Its artfully chosen mix of traditional and contemporary material, allied with Heidis achingly bittersweet, spun-gold voice, won her a growing audience across three continents
The New York Times - "A voice that's both awestruck and tender"

5/5 Maverick Magazine

5/5 Songlines

4/5 Uncut

4/5 Scotland on Sunday

4/5 The Sunday Herald

Billboard - What an impressive record this is. Very highly recommended

Daily Telegraph - Talbot is primed and ready for crossover success

Now, at last, comes its hotly anticipated follow-up, The Last Star. Produced by her multi-instrumentalist, multi-award-winning partner, John McCusker, and marking her debut foray into songwriting, it also sees Heidi engaging afresh with her traditional roots, meanwhile seeking out the best of modern-day balladry. It's an album that simultaneously reaffirms all the diverse expressive magic of its predecessor and extends it in arresting new directions.

This singular breadth of eloquence rests on deep and extensive foundations. While In Love + Light saw Heidi widely hailed as a major new talent, its seeds were sown years earlier, as she grew up in a musical household with eight siblings in rural Co. Kildare. After studying at Dublin's renowned Bel Canto school, she moved to New York aged 18, where she paid her dues in wedding bands, then honed her craft around the city's bars and clubs, soaking up influences, examples and experience. Via the Big Apples vibrant Irish musical community, she was recruited in 2002 as lead singer by the celebrated Irish-American group Cherish the Ladies, with whom she toured coast-to-coast and beyond for the next five years. The launch of In Love + Light, at Glasgows world-famous Celtic Connections festival in 2008, announced her return to solo performance.

Besides fronting her own trio line-up - with McCusker, plus Boo Hewerdine on guitar - recent highlights of Heidi's intensive live schedule include opening for Eddi Reader on her 2009 UK/Irish tour, and featuring as a regular guest with folk/rock supergroup Drever, McCusker Woomble. She's also lent her radiant tones to a string of albums by other leading artists, including Michael McGoldrick, Idlewild, Kris Drever and Sandy Wright - most of whom have now lent their talents in turn to In Love + Lights hotly anticipated follow-up, The Last Star.

Now living in Edinburgh, where she's found a home from home in the thick of Scotland's vibrant contemporary roots scene, Heidi will soon be on the road again to promote The Last Star, a true gem of an album which is sure to send her own star yet more steeply into the ascendant

Story Machines: Movies - Different film, same story: How movies lost the plot

Don Boyd, author of Margot’s Secrets and founding Director of Hibrow Productions will be making his debut appearance at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, as part of the innovative ‘Story Machines’ one-day micro-festival on Wednesday 25th August.

D-boys and D-girls are what Hollywood calls the Development Executives whose job it is to work with writers and producers to get a story camera-ready. Because they’ve all read the identical how-to books by screenwriting gurus, everything looks a little more samey as each year goes by. Scriptwriter and author Charlie Fletcher brings together a panel of filmmakers and critics including Don Boyd and William Nicholson – to show that when movies are just defective cookie-cutter copies, they are the real dangerous Story Machines.Go to Top of Page

Tuesdays central London

Sandy's Salsa Speed Dating was founded by Mrs Sandra Cooper in 2004. She has been dancing since the tender age of 7, and since then her passion for the dance has turned her into a Salsa Guru. Growing up in her home town of Caguas, (right next door to Wilnelia Merced, former Miss World & wife to Sir Bruce Forsyth from Strictly Come Dancing), made it easier for her to fuel her passion and talent for the dance.

Now, she resides in England, and has set herself on a mission to teach Salsa to everyone, so that Everybody can share in the fun and joy of the dance. She teaches privately under her own name at clubs, wedding, networking events & parties, and also to the masses by introducing "Sandy's Salsa Speed Dating", a great place to dance, have fun, and meet new people whilst listening to hot salsa rythms.
